Afrobeats superstar Wizkid has solidified his status as a global music icon, as his collaboration with Drake on the track “One Dance” surpasses 3.3 billion streams on Spotify, the world’s largest music streaming platform. This makes Wizkid the first and only African artist to be featured on a song that has garnered over 3 billion streams, placing him in a league of his own.

Released on Apr. 5, 2016, “One Dance” features British house music singer Kyla and was part of Drake’s fourth studio album, Views. The track, co-written by Drake, Wizkid, and Kyla with special production input from Wizkid, became an instant global hit. Its blend of Afrobeats, dancehall, and house music resonated with fans worldwide, propelling it to the top of the charts and earning it a place in music history.

 

Wizkid’s ‘One Dance’ sets streaming milestones

 

“One Dance” currently ranks as the 7th most streamed song on Spotify, a testament to its enduring popularity. The song’s impact extended beyond streaming numbers; it broke records as the first song to reach a billion streams on Spotify, a feat that earned it two Guinness World Records. Moreover, “One Dance” dominated the Billboard Hot 100 chart, spending 36 weeks on the chart, including 10 weeks at the number one spot.

 

Wizkid’s success with “One Dance” marked a significant moment in his career, elevating him from a rising star in the Afrobeats movement to a global music powerhouse. While his subsequent releases, including the critically acclaimed “Essence,” have also achieved international success, none have matched the groundbreaking impact of “One Dance.” 

 

“Essence,” released on July 17, 2021, and featuring Afrobeats star Tems and Canadian singer Justin Bieber, came close, further establishing Wizkid’s influence on the global stage.
