South African billionaire and philanthropist Patrice Motsepe, founder and chairman of African Rainbow Minerals and African Rainbow Capital, has left a profound mark on Africa’s business landscape and the world of philanthropy. Co-founding the Motsepe Foundation with his wife, Precious Moloi-Motsepe, in 1999, he has championed numerous charitable initiatives. Beyond business and philanthropy, Motsepe is also making waves in the world of sports.

Renowned for revitalizing underperforming gold mines in 1997, Motsepe has successfully diversified his endeavors. He serves as president of the Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club and brings his expertise to the role of Confederation of African Football (CAF) president. Drawing on his $2.8 billion fortune and extensive business acumen, he has significantly improved CAF’s financial standing, further cementing his legacy across multiple fields.

Under Motsepe, CAF achieved record revenues, enabling increased investment in football development and support for Member Associations. Annual subventions for Member Associations have doubled from $200,000 in 2021 to $400,000, providing critical funding for football activities. 

CAF reduced its fiscal deficit significantly, from $28.9 million to $9.2 million, a major improvement from the $45 million loss in 2021, attributed to strategic reforms initiated in 2021. 

CAF presented its 2022-2023 audited financial report and 2024-2025 budget at the 46th Ordinary Assembly in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on October 22, 2022, chaired by CAF President Patrice Motsepe. For 2024-2025, CAF has also projected a net profit of $11.7 million, its first in years, strengthening its ability to develop football in Africa.

Motsepe, elected unopposed as the 7th CAF President on March 12, 2021, has transformed African football’s appeal through his business acumen, driving commercial viability and fostering growth at all levels.

Infrastructure Development: Building for the future

Motsepe has prioritized infrastructure as a cornerstone of his strategy. In 2022 alone, $100 million was allocated to upgrade stadiums across key footballing nations, ensuring facilities meet international standards.
