Sunbird Tourism projects $6.8 million profit in 2024, resilient amid Malawi’s economic slowdown

Despite Malawi’s economic slowdown, including a revised GDP growth forecast of just 2 percent due to drought-induced agricultural declines and macroeconomic imbalances, Sunbird Tourism’s robust performance stands out. This demonstrates the company’s operational strength and strategic focus in navigating these headwinds.

Sunbird Tourism’s leadership and market dominance

Founded in 1973 as a state enterprise, Sunbird Tourism has grown into Malawi’s premier hospitality brand, commanding the country’s largest hotel network. The company operates nine properties, including four city hotels across Malawi’s three regions, four lakeside resorts along Lake Malawi, and an iconic mountain retreat in Zomba.

Under the leadership of Vilipo Munthali, Sunbird has expanded both its service offerings and market footprint. By the end of 2023, total assets surged 44.03 percent to MWK 83.56 billion ($48.2 million), up from MWK 58.01 billion ($33.47 million), cementing its dominance in the nation’s hotel industry.

This growth underscores Sunbird’s strategic focus on operational efficiency and market expansion, driving profitability and reinforcing shareholder value.

Despite economic headwinds, the company’s robust performance continues to instill investor confidence, positioning Sunbird as a pillar of stability and a key player in shaping Malawi’s hospitality sector for years to come.
