Mitsubishi Electric Corporation is expanding its footprint in Africa with a significant investment in South Africa’s heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) and data center cooling market.

The Japanese electronics and electrical systems manufacturer said its subsidiary, Mitsubishi Electric Hydronics & IT Cooling Systems S.p.A. (MEHITS), acquired a stake in Intramech Pty Ltd., a Johannesburg-based engineering company that designs and installs applied HVAC and IT cooling systems.

The deal highlights Mitsubishi Electric’s commitment to Africa’s fast-growing infrastructure and industrial sectors, where energy-efficient cooling technologies are in increasing demand.

Expanding cooling innovation across Southern Africa

By joining forces with Intramech, Mitsubishi Electric plans to develop a service network that spans southern Africa—offering design, installation, maintenance, and operational support under one umbrella.

The company said the partnership will blend its global engineering expertise with Intramech’s local experience. “Strengthening our presence in Africa allows us to deliver integrated solutions that improve cooling performance while lowering energy use,” Mitsubishi Electric said in a statement.

Supporting skills and sustainable growth

The investment positions Mitsubishi Electric to deliver eco-friendly systems suited for Africa’s hot climates while supporting local talent development and technology transfer.

Headquartered in Tokyo, the company is one of the world’s leading producers of electrical and electronic systems, serving industries from energy and manufacturing to transport and urban infrastructure.

Its MEHITS division, based in Italy, designs and manufactures hydronic air-conditioning and IT cooling systems across 12 plants in Europe, China, and India. The division exports to clients worldwide, including technology and industrial operators seeking reliable, energy-efficient cooling.

With its partnership with Intramech, Mitsubishi Electric signals a long-term commitment to South Africa and the wider region.
