Mohamed Salah, the Egyptian football superstar, has solidified his spot as one of the world’s richest athletes and a global sports icon. With career earnings now exceeding $125 million, Salah’s success mirrors his consistent dominance on the pitch and his immense appeal off it.

Career earnings breakdown

Salah, who joined Liverpool Football Club in 2017, has accumulated $115.84 million in career earnings, according to tracking platform Spotrac. This figure excludes income from his two-year stint with A.S. Roma, which further elevates his total above $125 million.

In the current 2024/2025 season, Salah is set to earn $18.2 million in base salary, a slight increase from the $18 million he received in the previous season. This highlights his status as one of the Premier League’s highest-paid athletes, reflecting his invaluable contribution to Liverpool’s success.

Forbes recognition

Salah ranks 38th on Forbes’ 2024 list of the world’s highest-paid athletes, with total earnings of $53 million over the past year. Of this, $35 million came from on-field income, encompassing salary, bonuses, and prize money. His $18 million in off-field earnings highlights his marketability, derived from endorsements, appearances, and licensing deals.

Despite nearing the end of his three-year, $54.6 million contract extension with Liverpool, signed in 2022, Salah remains a key player for the club. His 12 goals and 10 assists across all competitions this season have propelled Liverpool to the top of both the Premier League and UEFA Champions League standings.

Brand power and global influence

Salah’s influence transcends football. His collaborations with global brands like Vodafone, Pepsi, Mountain View Egypt, and Adidas position him as a marketing powerhouse. With over 98 million followers across Facebook, Instagram, and X, Salah’s digital reach amplifies his appeal to advertisers and fans alike.

Notably, Adidas celebrated Salah’s global unifying power in 2021 with its “Impossible Is Nothing” campaign. This move underscored his ability to connect with diverse audiences, a key factor in his enduring brand partnerships.

Philanthropy and social impact

Salah’s generosity has often gone under the radar but gained prominence during the 2023 Israel-Palestine conflict. Criticized initially for his silence, Salah’s past contributions came to light, with former Egyptian national team assistant coach Diaa El-Sayed revealing that the footballer had donated over $10 million to aid Gaza.

“Everyone knows his patriotism and love for all Arabs,” El-Sayed stated, defending Salah against critics. “He has given a lot to the people of Gaza. Those who criticize him do so for the sake of criticism itself.” His philanthropic efforts exemplify his commitment to leveraging his wealth and influence for good, cementing his legacy not just as a sports icon but as a humanitarian.
