At a Glance:

  • FlySafair became South Africa’s largest airline in a decade, capturing 60% of domestic market share by 2023.
  • The airline’s fleet expansion includes 30+ Boeing 737s, boosting operational efficiency and on-time performance.
  • FlySafair expands regionally, adding routes to Mauritius, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, and Namibia in October 2024.

FlySafair has soared to prominence, becoming South Africa’s largest airline in just a decade, through a combination of strategic growth, operational excellence, and a steadfast commitment to affordability.

Founded on October 16, 2014, as a subsidiary of Safair, a company with a history dating back to 1965, FlySafair was created to fill a significant gap in the market for affordable domestic air travel.

Launching in a market dominated by established players like South African Airways and Mango, FlySafair quickly carved out a niche by offering reliable, budget-friendly flights to a growing base of air travelers.

Today, it stands as one of Southern Africa’s most important airlines, having completed over 260,000 flights and served 40 million customers.

Fleet expansion and operational efficiency

Starting with just two Boeing 737-400 aircraft, FlySafair’s growth has been nothing short of remarkable.

As demand surged, the airline upgraded to the more efficient Boeing 737-800 aircraft, which have since become the backbone of its operations.

Currently, FlySafair operates over 30 Boeing 737s, with plans to continue expanding its fleet to meet the growing demand.

This strategic focus on fleet modernization has bolstered FlySafair’s operational efficiency, contributing to one of the best on-time performance rates in the aviation industry.

The airline has consistently ranked among the top performers globally, with punctuality becoming a cornerstone of its reputation for reliability.

FlySafair’s emphasis on cost-effectiveness has yielded significant results, particularly in the domestic market.

By February 2023, FlySafair commanded a dominant 60 percent share of South Africa’s domestic seat capacity, up from just 25 percent pre-pandemic.

This growth was fueled by the collapse of competitors such as Comair in 2022, which opened up new opportunities for FlySafair to expand its footprint.

Expanding horizons: From domestic routes to regional growth

FlySafair began with a limited selection of domestic routes connecting major cities like Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban.

As the airline’s customer base grew, so did its network. The airline now services 11 destinations across South Africa, with additional routes to Mauritius, Harare (Zimbabwe), and Zanzibar (Tanzania).

FlySafair continues its expansion across Southern Africa, launching a new route to Windhoek, Namibia, in October 2024.

This development marks a significant milestone in the airline’s regional growth strategy, designed to enhance connectivity, stimulate tourism, and drive economic integration throughout Southern Africa.

These strategic expansions reflect FlySafair’s commitment to strengthening its footprint and positioning as a key player in the region’s aviation sector.

Operational excellence recognized globally

FlySafair’s commitment to operational excellence has been recognized on the global stage.

In 2024, the airline was named the most punctual airline in the Middle East and Africa by Cirium, with an impressive 93.82 percent of its flights arriving on time.

This recognition underscores FlySafair’s resilience and ability to consistently meet high standards of reliability, despite the challenges that have affected the aviation industry.

Strong leadership and strategic vision

At the helm of FlySafair’s ascent is CEO Elmar Conradie, who took charge in 2015. Under his leadership, the airline has transformed into a leading force in South Africa’s aviation sector.

Conradie’s strategic direction has focused on building a customer-centric, cost-efficient airline, enabling FlySafair to offer affordable flights without compromising on quality.

The future: Continued growth and expansion

FlySafair’s trajectory is set to continue upward, with plans to enhance operational reliability, expand its route network, and maintain its commitment to affordability and punctuality.

As South Africa’s largest airline, FlySafair’s journey from a startup to an industry leader reflects a narrative of strategic vision, resilience, and a dedication to connecting people across Southern Africa.

With a firm focus on expanding its regional influence, FlySafair is poised to remain a dominant player in Africa’s aviation sector, offering affordable, reliable, and timely air travel to millions of customers.
