Africa’s music stars are taking center stage at the world’s biggest football tournaments, transforming halftime shows and opening ceremonies into global celebrations of African culture. From Burna Boy’s historic UEFA Champions League performance to Davido’s FIFA World Cup final anthem and Yemi Alade’s electrifying AFCON opener, Nigerian artists are redefining sports entertainment on a global scale.

As global demand for culturally diverse content rises, football federations and organizers are tapping into Afrobeats to reach younger, more international audiences. These high-profile performances are not only boosting the visibility of Nigerian music, but also reinforcing the country’s influence at the intersection of sports, entertainment, and global pop culture.

Burna Boy makes Champions League history in 2023

In June 2023, Grammy-winning artist Burna Boy made headlines by performing at the UEFA Champions League Final halftime show in Istanbul. His energetic set—featuring global hits like “Last Last” and “Alone”—marked the first-ever halftime performance by a Nigerian artist at Europe’s most prestigious football event.

His performance was widely praised for bringing African sound and rhythm to a stage traditionally dominated by Western pop acts.

Davido shines at 2022 FIFA World cup final in Qatar

In a groundbreaking appearance, Davido joined Trinidad Cardona and Aisha to perform the official anthem “Hayya Hayya (Better Together)” at the FIFA World Cup Final in Qatar. As the first Nigerian artist to perform at a World Cup final, Davido’s appearance underscored Nigeria’s growing influence in global entertainment and sports.

Yemi Alade lights up 2024 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire

Afropop powerhouse Yemi Alade delivered a vibrant performance during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire. Her show, a fusion of dynamic choreography and pan-African rhythms, was a celebration of African unity and Nigeria’s enduring musical footprint.

Patoranking, Kizz Daniel take over 2022 FIFA

Also at the festival, Kizz Daniel performed his viral hit “Buga”, igniting the crowd with the infectious anthem. Sharing a clip on Instagram, he captioned: “As a Naija boy, I say thank you Africa,” capturing national pride and pan-African unity.

D’banj sets the tone at 2013 AFCON in South Africa

Afrobeats pioneer D’banj headlined the 2013 AFCON closing ceremony in South Africa, performing smash hits like “Oliver Twist.” His high-energy show was one of the first times Nigerian pop was prominently featured on a major international football stage—paving the way for today’s superstars.
