  • OCP acquires La Mamounia for $173 million, boosting Morocco’s luxury tourism ambitions.
  • The 1923-built hotel combines Moorish elegance with Art Deco charm and lush palace gardens.
  • Renovated in 2020, La Mamounia earned global accolades and posted $23 million net profit.

A century after its grand debut in 1923 on royal grounds—once a sultan’s garden—La Mamounia Marrakech remains an enduring symbol of Moroccan elegance, global prestige, and is frequently hailed among the world’s greatest hotels with timeless heritage.

Set within a 20-acre former royal garden inside Marrakech’s ancient medina walls, La Mamounia is a legendary palace hotel that masterfully fuses Moorish opulence with Art Deco elegance, offering guests an immersive experience steeped in history and refinement.

Widely regarded as North Africa’s finest hotel, La Mamounia was recently named the premier Hotel in North Africa and the 11th Best Hotel in the World in the 2024 Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards—marking the fourth time it has received this prestigious regional accolade. Further cementing its global status, Robb Report ranked the property as the world’s 2nd most beautiful luxury hotel.

A century of prestige and reinvention
La Mamounia has long served as a cultural nexus for royalty, statesmen, and artists—Winston Churchill, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Charlie Chaplin, and Yves Saint Laurent among its famed guests. Its 2020 multimillion-dollar renovation sensitively updated interiors while preserving the property’s architectural soul, reaffirming its stature among the world’s top luxury hotels.

Strategic repositioning under new Moroccan stewardship
In July 2024, a historic shift in ownership transferred the Moroccan government’s 60% stake to the state-owned OCP Group, a global phosphate powerhouse, for MAD1.7 billion ($173 million).

Now with a controlling interest, OCP joins the National Railway Office (ONCF)—the hotel’s original developer—as custodians of La Mamounia’s future. The move is part of Morocco’s broader privatization strategy aimed at optimizing state assets while ensuring cultural icons remain under national stewardship.

Grandeur across rooms, gardens, and suites
From intricately tiled courtyards and zellige mosaics to luxuriously appointed rooms and palatial suites, every detail at La Mamounia exudes craftsmanship.

Guest accommodations open to lush Andalusian gardens and offer tranquil views of the Atlas Mountains, while private riads provide the ultimate retreat with secluded pools and round-the-clock butler service.

Award-winning gastronomy and wellness
Dining at La Mamounia is a culinary odyssey, featuring signature Moroccan flavors at Le Marocain, refined Italian at L’Italien by Don Alfonso, and French haute cuisine at L’Asiatique par Jean-Georges.

The hotel’s acclaimed spa and wellness center, with its traditional hammam and Guerlain treatments, remains one of North Africa’s most luxurious sanctuaries.

Looking ahead: A future built on legacy
With MAD226 million($23 million) in net profit in 2023 and global rankings from Conde Nast and Travel with Leisure, La Mamounia is entering a new phase of strategic enhancement and cultural leadership.

OCP’s investment signals a fusion of heritage preservation and contemporary vision—ensuring that this century-old palace hotel continues to set global standards in hospitality.

As Marrakesh flourishes as a luxury destination, La Mamounia endures not merely as a hotel, but as a living monument to Morocco’s elegance, resilience, and renaissance.
