Marrakech has cemented its status as Morocco’s top tourist destination after recording a 6 percent increase in overnight stays in the first half of 2025, according to the country’s Tourism Observatory.
The city welcomed more than 5 million overnight stays, fueled by rising domestic and international demand, pushing hotel occupancy to 71 percent compared with 68 percent a year earlier.
International and domestic travel fuel growth
The growth momentum was particularly strong among foreign travelers, with international stays climbing 16 percent, while domestic tourism advanced 5 percent.
Marrakech’s mix of vibrant culture, historic landmarks, and luxury hotels continues to attract a diverse visitor base, driving the city’s resilience.
June marked a high point with nearly 784,100 overnight stays and a 66 percent occupancy rate, underscoring the city’s enduring global appeal.
Morocco overall posted a 13 percent rise in overnight stays, with Marrakech leading the surge alongside Casablanca and Fez.
Analysts say improved air connectivity, especially new direct flights from Europe and the Middle East, has boosted access to the Red City, helping it outperform regional peers in North Africa.
Infrastructure and marketing power tourism expansion
The Moroccan government’s investment in modernizing transport networks, expanding hotel capacity, and upgrading public services has reinforced Marrakech’s tourism strength.
Enhanced infrastructure—along with aggressive marketing campaigns targeting global travelers—has positioned the city as a premier international destination.
Tourism’s rebound has also created jobs and driven economic growth, supporting Morocco’s post-pandemic recovery.
Marrakech’s robust performance signals the country’s ability to compete with major destinations in Africa and the Middle East, particularly in the luxury travel, eco-tourism, and adventure segments.
Morocco’s broader tourism boom
Beyond Marrakech, Morocco’s tourism industry is experiencing a wider boom. Diverse landscapes, from the Atlas Mountains to the Sahara Desert, paired with world-class cultural hubs like Casablanca and Fez, continue to attract both regional and global visitors.
Growing demand for sustainable travel and luxury experiences is further propelling Morocco into the ranks of Africa’s fastest-growing travel markets.
Marrakech’s outlook: Resilience and long-term growth
Marrakech’s resilience highlights its adaptability in the face of global travel disruptions. By appealing to both high-end and budget travelers, the city has secured its role as Morocco’s tourism engine.
With continued investment in infrastructure and strong demand from Europe, the Middle East, and beyond, Marrakech is set to maintain its dominance in African tourism.
As the industry expands, the city is expected to see stronger job creation, higher foreign exchange earnings, and deeper global recognition—ensuring that Marrakech remains one of Africa’s most iconic and enduring destinations.
