ADvTECH Group, South Africa’s largest private higher-education provider, through its Independent Institute of Education (IIE), has launched a new brand called Emeris. The initiative brings together three of its best-known institutions—Varsity College, Vega School and IIE MSA—under a single name.
The move comes at a time when South Africa is weighing reforms that could, for the first time, allow qualifying private institutions to be formally recognised as universities.
Emeris will debut officially in 2026, coinciding with the opening of a R420 million ($24.31 million) campus in Sandton, Johannesburg. The facility will replace existing Varsity College Sandton and Vega Bordeaux operations and accommodate up to 9,000 students.

Sandton mega campus sets a new standard
The new campus has been designed with international benchmarks in mind. Plans include a two-storey library and information hub, a student centre offering career and counselling services, an indoor sports arena capable of hosting national and international events, and innovation-focused facilities such as IT labs, podcast studios and interactive classrooms.
“Emeris represents a bold step forward for private higher education in South Africa,” said Louise Wiseman, Managing Director of Emeris. “By unifying our institutions, we can consolidate expertise, expand facilities and deliver a richer student experience.”

A foundation built on three decades of growth
The IIE brings more than 30 years of academic development to the new brand. Of its 300 academics, 203 already hold Master’s or Doctoral degrees, while 87 are completing doctorates. The institution has accredited more than 40 postgraduate programmes and is expanding into fields such as Digital Learning and Learning Support.
Emeris has also moved into technical disciplines, launching three engineering qualifications accredited by the Engineering Council of South Africa—the only private institution in the country with such recognition.

Timing aligns with regulatory shifts
The launch comes as the Department of Higher Education and Training considers reforms that could open the door for private institutions to gain university status.
“The simplification of our premium brand structures under the Emeris name marks an important step on our path toward recognition as a university,” said Geoff Whyte, CEO of ADvTECH.
Forging stronger industry and community ties
Emeris also plans to deepen engagement with businesses and civil society. Its academic model emphasizes smaller class sizes, practical learning, and close student support. Sustainability, ethical leadership and environmental awareness are being woven into curricula to prepare students for a rapidly changing economy.

A name rooted in meaning
The Emeris name draws inspiration from Ephemeris—the movement of celestial bodies—and Emeritus, meaning earned merit, symbolizing the journey of achievement.
“When we open our doors in 2026, Emeris will mark the beginning of a new era for South African higher education,” Wiseman said.
