Plentify, a South African startup that combines artificial intelligence with smart home hardware, has closed an oversubscribed Series A funding round, raising nearly $15 million in total capital.
The company helps households connect appliances such as water heaters, batteries, and solar inverters to the cheapest and cleanest available electricity, lowering costs and increasing the use of renewable energy.
The latest round underscores investor confidence in Plentify’s approach at a time when climate-tech funding is increasingly competitive.
Funding supports growth of smart solar solutions
The Series A round was led by Secha Capital, Buffet Investments, and a South African family office, with participation from existing investors E3 Capital and Fireball Capital, as well as new backers including Endeavor South Africa’s Harvest Fund and Satgana.
“Investors see that what we’ve built in South Africa can have a global impact,” said Jon Kornik, CEO and co-founder of Plentify. “Our platform allows households to manage energy intelligently, and this approach is gaining interest worldwide.”
Plentify’s growth is closely linked to South Africa’s energy challenges. Frequent power outages and rising electricity prices have driven the adoption of rooftop solar, particularly among middle-income households.
Local innovation proves viable for global markets
Brendan Mullen, managing director at Secha Capital, highlighted the market potential: “South African households have needed reliable energy management from day one. Plentify has delivered, and the same solutions can apply to other markets facing subsidy reductions.”
Since its last funding round in 2023, Plentify has expanded deployments more than tenfold. Kailas Nair, Plentify’s chief growth officer and co-founder, noted that South Africa offers “the perfect environment to test and scale market-driven home energy solutions.”
Looking ahead, Kornik envisions homes that generate, store, and manage their own clean energy. “Connecting homes through AI can help build a resilient, fair energy system—not just here, but around the world,” he said.
Founded in 2017, Plentify operates in South Africa and the United States, combining advanced hardware, AI, and user-focused design to help households optimize renewable energy use while supporting broader electricity grids.
