Ethiopia is staking a bold claim in Africa’s tourism sector with the launch of Shabeely Resort in the Somali region, a 385-hectare development designed to showcase the country’s nature and culture. The resort is a key part of the government-backed “Geda Legacy” project under the Dine for Generations initiative, aimed at drawing visitors while celebrating Ethiopia’s heritage.

The inauguration attracted high-profile attendees, including the presidents of Somalia and Djibouti, reflecting its regional significance. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, speaking at the ceremony, described Shabeely as more than a resort. “The Shabeely project, which is part of the Dine Initiative in the Somali region, with three restaurants serving up to 400 guests, a dedicated cultural venue, high-tech meeting halls, children’s play areas, and shaded walkways across its 15.4km expanse, Shabeely is designed to foster connection and community,” he said.
Shabeely Resort highlights Ethiopia’s heritage
Shabeely Resort blends hospitality with culture and recreation. Its three restaurants can host 400 guests simultaneously, while a cultural center showcases local traditions. Banquet and conference halls are available for business and social gatherings. Families can enjoy children’s playgrounds, shaded walking paths stretching 15.4 kilometers, and outdoor attractions including a fruit park with 10,000 trees and a camel park, offering visitors a mix of leisure and insight into Ethiopia’s ecological and cultural heritage.

The resort has 51 guest rooms equipped with full facilities, supporting Ethiopia’s appeal to both domestic and international travelers. Dining areas and outdoor spaces are structured to encourage social interaction and highlight local customs. By combining accommodation, entertainment and cultural immersion, Shabeely Resort stands as a key player in Ethiopia’s tourism sector. Its amenities, cultural programming and recreational facilities are designed to draw visitors seeking both relaxation and meaningful engagement with the country’s heritage.
Resort combines culture, jobs and tourism
Shabeely Resort is part of Ethiopia’s broader plan to leverage its natural and cultural assets to boost economic growth and international recognition. By integrating hospitality with cultural and recreational offerings, the resort aims to create tangible outcomes for the tourism sector. It provides employment opportunities, supports local businesses, and encourages community participation, aligning tourism development with national economic priorities.

Beyond its commercial goals, Shabeely offers a model for tourism that marries infrastructure investment with cultural presentation. Its approach is intended to encourage repeat visits, attract international attention, and ensure that the benefits of tourism extend to local communities, reinforcing Ethiopia’s position as an emerging tourism destination in East Africa.
