In March, Victoria Falls is loud, wet and unforgettable

March marks one of the most striking moments to experience Victoria Falls, which sits on the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia.

As the rainy season begins to ease, the Zambezi River runs full, sending vast sheets of water over the basalt edge and into the gorge below.

The scale is immediate. Mist rises in thick columns, the sound carries across the forest, and rainbows often form by midmorning.

It is a period when the falls feel less like a landmark and more like a force, drawing visitors who want to see Africa’s most famous waterfall at its most powerful.

This is also a shoulder season. Visitor numbers are lower than during peak winter months, while scenery is at its greenest.

For many travelers, March offers a balance between drama, space and value.

Warm days continue, with temperatures usually between 26 and 30 degrees Celsius.

Short showers can still pass through, but humidity begins to drop, making long walks and outdoor viewing more comfortable than earlier in the wet season.

Water, mist and the best views

By March, the Zambezi is near peak flow. On the Zimbabwe side, spray can be heavy and at times obscure the gorge, but it also creates some of the most vivid rainbows of the year. Waterproof jackets and camera covers are essential.

Aerial views become especially rewarding. Helicopter and microlight flights rise above the mist, offering clear perspective on the full width of the falls. Some high-adrenaline activities, including white-water rafting and Devil’s Pool, are usually paused due to strong currents.

Wildlife and river experiences

The landscape around Victoria Falls is lush, attracting a wide range of birdlife.

Migratory species mix with residents, making March a strong month for birdwatching.

Nearby Hwange National Park remains active, though thick vegetation can make wildlife harder to spot.

For a slower pace, sunset cruises upstream deliver calm water, open skies and frequent sightings of hippos and elephants along the banks.

Planning and practical details

Early mornings often provide the clearest views. Accommodation is generally easier to secure, with more flexible pricing across hotels and lodges on both sides of the border.

Travel between Zimbabwe and Zambia is simplified by the KAZA Univisa, which allows multiple entries for up to 30 days at a cost of $50.
