The shape of Mediterranean travel is beginning to change as Egypt and Türkiye move closer toward a more coordinated tourism partnership.

Both countries, long seen as rivals for visitors, are now exploring ways to grow together and attract new investment into the region.

At the Eastern Mediterranean International Tourism and Travel Exhibition (EMITT) 2026 in Istanbul, officials from both sides outlined a shared plan aimed at strengthening visitor flows, encouraging joint promotion and expanding business ties.

The discussions reflected a shift from competition to cooperation, with leaders stressing the benefits of working side by side.

Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities said the partnership could help deepen travel links while opening the door for more private-sector participation.

The goal, officials said, is to create a steady exchange of travellers and investment that supports long-term growth for both destinations.

Industry players attending the event described the approach as practical and timely, especially as global travel continues to recover and regional markets grow in importance.

Strategic incentives for hospitality expansion

Egypt is positioning its tourism sector as an attractive destination for foreign investment, with Turkish companies encouraged to explore opportunities in hotel development and management.

The ministry said new incentives are being prepared for projects that align with national development plans.

While Turkish firms already have a strong presence in Egypt’s industrial sector, their role in tourism remains limited.

Authorities say they are working to close that gap by offering easier processes and highlighting the success of existing Turkish brands operating in the country.

Officials expressed confidence that these examples will encourage further interest.

A banner year strengthens confidence

The push for fresh investment follows a strong performance in 2025.

Egypt welcomed about 19 million visitors, marking a 21% increase and surpassing earlier expectations.

Travel from Türkiye stood out, rising by 43% over the same period.

At the same time, about 250,000 Egyptians visited Türkiye, a sign of growing two-way travel.

Officials say this balanced exchange helps support airline operations and strengthens regional links.

For 2026, Egypt is targeting overall tourism growth of 10%, with Turkish arrivals expected to climb by at least 25%.

Connectivity and promotion key to next phase

Despite the positive outlook, limited flight capacity remains a concern.

Current connections between the two countries are seen as insufficient to meet demand, even with a projected 20% to 25% increase in seats.

Aviation leaders are being urged to add routes and frequencies to support future growth.

Tourism authorities are also planning joint marketing campaigns, including partnerships with digital creators, to promote cultural sites, resorts and new attractions.

Officials say closer coordination between the public and private sectors will help build awareness and encourage more travel in both directions.

As 2026 approaches, both countries are focused on turning these plans into action, with the aim of strengthening regional tourism and creating a more connected Mediterranean travel experience.
