Akhannouch drives Morocco’s largest social support

Morocco has launched an expanded social protection program, providing direct cash transfers to 3.9 million families in 2026. Led by Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch, the initiative covers 12.5 million citizens, including 5.5 million children and 1.7 million seniors.

With digital management and new regional branches, Morocco is moving from fragmented aid to transparent, measurable social support that strengthens citizen confidence and improves living standards.

Program overview and payment structure
The National Agency for Social Support (ANSS) oversees implementation, focusing on data-driven targeting. Eligibility criteria are clear, and digital records replace the prior patchwork aid system.

Under the expanded program, approximately 3.9 million families, covering over 12.5 million citizens, will receive direct cash transfers in 2026. This includes 5.5 million children supported from birth to 21 years and 1.7 million seniors aged 60 and above.

Monthly payments range from MAD 500 ($54.55) to MAD 1,350 ($147.28), depending on household composition and needs, allowing beneficiaries to cover food, education, and healthcare. For many recipients, these transfers cover essential expenses such as food, schooling, and healthcare, offering tangible relief and improving daily living standards.

Program impact & expansion
New branches, like the one in El Jadida, ensure regional accessibility. Performance monitoring will track poverty reduction and social mobility. Collaborative efforts with ministries improve school retention and employment opportunities.

Morocco’s 2026 rollout represents a landmark in structured social reform. Effective execution could make the program a benchmark for African social support initiatives, combining financial sustainability with measurable social impact.
