Finch Hattons opens luxury Safari camp in Kenya’s Tsavo West

Luxury safari travel in Kenya is expanding with the growth of Finch Hattons Luxury Tented Camp, an upscale camp set inside Tsavo West National Park.

The property sits at the base of the Chyulu Hills, an area known for its volcanic landscapes, natural springs and wide, open skies. 

The camp’s expansion comes as high-end safari operators report steady interest from travelers seeking privacy, conservation and fewer vehicles on game drives.

Tsavo West, often described as one of Kenya’s wildest parks, is also recognized as the world’s largest rhino sanctuary.

On clear days, guests can see Mount Kilimanjaro rising in the distance. 

Finch Hattons has 17 tented suites spread across 35 acres of protected land, offering what executives describe as a quieter alternative to busier reserves.

The property is part of Virgin Limited Edition, the hospitality group founded by Richard Branson, placing it among a portfolio of high-end retreats worldwide.

A private stay in the wild 

Fourteen luxury tented suites feature large decks overlooking springs frequented by hippos.

Interiors draw on African design, with a focus on space and natural light.

Two-bedroom family suites provide additional room for groups traveling together. 

The Finch Hattons Suite includes a private plunge pool and dedicated staff, appealing to guests seeking added privacy.

The scale of the camp — fewer than 40 guests at full capacity — keeps the setting intimate.

Game drives and open landscapes 

Twice-daily game drives take visitors across Tsavo’s plains, lava fields and acacia woodland.

The park is home to red-dusted elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs and more than 500 bird species.

Night drives, arranged on request, offer a chance to spot nocturnal animals rarely seen during the day. 

Excursions into the Chyulu cloud forest add variety, with cooler air and sweeping views that stretch across southern Kenya.

Dining and wellness 

Meals focus on seasonal ingredients, including produce from the camp’s garden, grass-fed beef and seafood sourced from the Kenyan coast.

Guests can dine outdoors or gather in the Karen Blixen Lounge for drinks after sunset. 

The Chyulu Spa includes treatment rooms, a yoga deck, a hammam and an infinity pool.
