Africa is stepping up efforts to build secure digital infrastructure as governments seek greater control over how their data is stored and used.

Across the continent, public institutions are moving more services online while upgrading systems that support everything from health records to tax administration.

The shift is part of a wider push toward digital transformation in Africa, where leaders see technology as a way to improve public services, expand access to finance and support economic growth.

As these systems expand, so does concern about where government data is kept and who controls the infrastructure behind it.

That concern is driving interest in sovereign cloud platforms—systems that allow countries to store and process sensitive data within their own borders while meeting national regulations.

For many African governments, such platforms offer a path to modernize public services without giving up control over critical digital assets.

Against this backdrop, Cassava Technologies has introduced a new platform aimed at helping governments build secure digital systems powered by artificial intelligence.

The company unveiled its National Sovereign Cloud (NSC) solution, designed to support the development of government services built on cloud and AI technology.

Building secure digital infrastructure

Cassava said the platform combines cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity protection and high-performance computing for artificial intelligence.

It also includes locally developed AI language models that can support digital tools tailored to African users.

A key part of the initiative is the creation of an AI Institute, which will provide training and skills development for government agencies, businesses and developers.

The program is intended to help build the technical workforce needed to support Africa’s growing digital economy.

Expanding AI-powered public services

Beyond the core infrastructure, the platform supports tools designed to improve how governments interact with citizens.

These include conversational AI systems that can help handle public inquiries and digital services that make it easier for people to access government programs.

The system also supports payments and remittance infrastructure aimed at expanding financial inclusion, an area where digital platforms are playing an increasing role across Africa.

Beyond infrastructure, the platform helps governments engage citizens better.

“Across Africa, governments are accelerating their digital transformation agendas and are increasingly focused on ensuring that data and digital infrastructure remain secure and sovereign,” said Ahmed El Beheiry, group chief operating officer and group chief technology and AI officer at Cassava Technologies.

He said the platform will allow governments to build secure cloud and AI environments while enabling African developers and institutions to create technology designed for local needs.

By combining sovereign cloud infrastructure, advanced AI computing and secure connectivity, Cassava hopes to help governments strengthen public services while protecting sensitive data and supporting the continent’s growing digital economy.
