In a country where fuel queues and price shifts have long shaped daily life, Auwalu Abdullahi Rano has introduced a new way for Nigerians to buy petrol. The Kano‑born oil magnate has unveiled Nigeria’s first fully automated, unmanned fuel stations, letting motorists self-refuel 24/7 through digital controls and remote monitoring.

The shift is unfolding quietly compared with the sweeping projects often associated with fellow Kano industrialist Aliko Dangote, who is reshaping Africa’s refining sector. Yet within Nigeria’s fuel retail business, Rano’s latest step reflects years spent building a company that began with modest beginnings and grew into one of the country’s recognizable independent operators.

From ice blocks to oil distribution

Rano was born on February 7, 1974, in Lausu town in the Rano Local Government Area of Kano State in northern Nigeria. His early years in business were far removed from oil depots and tanker fleets. As a young trader, he sold ice blocks, groundnut oil and other local goods.

The venture gave him practical lessons about supply, demand and the discipline required to run even a small venture. Those experiences helped shape the decision he made in 1994, when at the age of 21 he began selling and distributing petroleum products on a small scale.

Two years later, the young entrepreneur moved further into the business by opening his first retail fuel outlet in Kano in 1996. The step marked the start of what would become a larger operation in the downstream petroleum sector. By 2002, he formally registered his company, A.A. Rano Nigeria Limited, a move that signaled a long‑term commitment to the industry.

Nationwide oil operations and distribution network

Over the years, the company expanded beyond a single station into a broader oil and gas enterprise. Today it operates across several segments of the petroleum value chain, including wholesale and retail distribution of petrol, diesel and kerosene, as well as liquefied petroleum gas and lubricants. The business also handles storage and haulage of petroleum products, oil exploration and lifting, and the trading and importation of fuel.

Scale became central to the company’s growth. A.A. Rano Nigeria Limited now operates more than 600 trucks and about 200 retail outlets spread across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. The network is designed to ensure fuel availability while keeping distribution close to consumers in different parts of the country.

The company has also invested in infrastructure to support its supply chain. As part of its expansion strategy, it acquired a vessel and constructed a tank farm with a storage capacity of 56 million liters. In Lagos, it is building a 20,000‑metric‑ton liquefied petroleum gas plant to support its activities in the LPG market.

New tech ensures precise fuel delivery

That infrastructure push sets the backdrop for the company’s newest venture: unmanned fuel stations designed to operate without on‑site attendants. The stations provide 24‑hour self‑service fueling supported by automated systems and remote supervision.

The initiative is being carried out in partnership with Petrosoft Limited, a Nigerian technology company that develops digital management systems for the oil and gas sector. Petrosoft’s SmartPump platform powers the stations, combining retail automation with inventory tracking and corporate fuel management tools.

The system allows motorists to refuel their vehicles independently while the software monitors the process in real time. Fleet vehicles can be identified automatically, and station operators can control fuel dispensers remotely. The technology also includes tank‑gauging tools and cloud monitoring that track fuel levels, detect leaks and help prevent theft.

According to the company, the goal is to reduce operational losses and give customers greater confidence in the accuracy of fuel measurements. The system is designed to ensure motorists receive the exact volume they pay for while providing operators with clearer oversight of fuel stocks and station performance.

Kano trader now leads multi‑sector group

For Rano, the move is another chapter in a career that began with small‑scale trading and gradually expanded into a diversified business group. Beyond A.A. Rano Nigeria Limited, his interests now extend into aviation, agriculture and energy‑related ventures.

These include companies such as Rano Gaz, Rano Air Nigeria, Rano Refinery, Rano Lube, Rano Rice Mill, Rano Commodity and Rano Accrete. His activities also reach beyond commerce. Through the A.A. Rano Foundation, he supports education, health care and youth‑focused initiatives across Nigeria, channeling resources toward community development programs.

The arrival of unmanned fuel stations adds a new layer to the story of a businessman who built his enterprise from modest beginnings in Kano. By blending technology with fuel retailing, Auwalu Abdullahi Rano is testing a new model for a sector that touches millions of motorists every day—one that could influence how Nigeria’s fuel stations operate in the years ahead.
