Africa’s luxury hospitality industry is undergoing a quiet but powerful transformation, driven not only by global hotel chains but by a growing class of wealthy African developers and billionaires who are financing and building world-class resorts and city hotels across the continent.

From the shores of the Red Sea to the financial districts of Lagos and Cape Town, these investors are reshaping Africa’s tourism and real-estate landscape by partnering with international brands such as Marriott International, Hilton Worldwide, and Radisson Hotel Group.

Unlike in many other regions where global operators often take the lead, Africa’s hotel boom is largely anchored by local capital.

Billionaires and influential developers are providing the land, financing, and construction expertise needed to bring internationally branded properties to life, while global hospitality giants step in to manage and operate the hotels.

This model has accelerated the expansion of luxury accommodations in key tourism and business hubs, supporting job creation, boosting tourism revenues, and strengthening local real-estate markets.

From Ethiopian developer Samuel Tafesse, who helped introduce Marriott’s brand to Ethiopia, to Egyptian billionaire Naguib Sawiris, whose visionary developments have transformed Red Sea destinations into global tourism hotspots, a new generation of African investors is redefining hospitality on the continent.

Their projects are not only elevating Africa’s global tourism appeal but also laying the foundation for a thriving luxury travel economy.

Below are 10 African billionaires and influential developers building major luxury hotel portfolios across the continent, as profiled by Shore Africa.
