Chimwala Bush Camp reopens in Malawi’s Liwonde National Park

Chimwala Bush Camp has reopened after an extensive upgrade, adding fresh weight to Malawi’s push to attract more high-end safari travelers.

The reopening comes as interest in African safari destinations continues to grow, with visitors seeking quieter, more personal experiences in nature.

Across Southern Africa, that demand is reshaping the tourism landscape.

Smaller camps with fewer rooms and a lighter footprint are drawing attention from travelers who want privacy without giving up comfort.

Operators are responding by upgrading properties and refining how they blend into the environment.

Chimwala’s return fits into that shift. The camp has been redesigned to offer a more comfortable stay while keeping its close link to the surrounding wilderness.

For Malawi, it marks another step in strengthening its position in a competitive regional safari market.

Set near Chinguni Hill in the southern section of Liwonde National Park, the camp looks out over a wide floodplain edged by mopane and miombo woodland.

The setting places guests close to wildlife while maintaining a sense of seclusion.

Upgraded stay with a lighter footprint

The camp accommodates up to 20 guests in eight safari tents and a family cottage.

Each tent includes an en-suite bathroom with hot and cold showers, flushing toilets and a small living area.

Solar power supports daily operations, while stand fans, mosquito nets, a writing desk and a coffee station add practical comfort.

The family cottage is designed for groups, offering two en-suite bedrooms alongside shared living space, making it suitable for families or small parties traveling together.

The setting places guests close to wildlife while maintaining a sense of seclusion.

Safari experiences at the center

Chimwala Bush Camp operates on a full-board basis, with meals and a morning game drive included.

Guests can also book additional activities, including evening drives and boat trips along the Shire River, which provide a different view of the park’s wildlife and landscape.
