Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world’s largest brewer, has announced that its longstanding chairman, Martin J. Barrington, will retire following the company’s Annual Shareholders’ Meeting on April 29, 2026, marking the end of more than nine years on the board.

Barrington, who has served as chairman since 2019 and joined the board in 2016, is stepping down in line with the company’s corporate governance policy on retirement age. His exit closes a leadership chapter that coincided with a period of strategic repositioning and operational discipline at the Belgian brewing giant.

Leadership transition underway

At the request of the board, Barrington extended his tenure beyond the standard retirement threshold to provide continuity and guide the company through key transitions. During his leadership, he worked closely with CEO Michel Doukeris, helping to steer the company’s long-term growth strategy and governance framework.

“It has been a pleasure to serve on and lead the AB InBev Board,” Barrington said, noting the company’s strong positioning to drive growth in the global beer market and deliver sustained shareholder value.

To fill the vacancy, restricted shareholders have proposed William F. Gifford Jr., the retiring CEO of Altria Group, as a board member, subject to shareholder approval at the upcoming meeting. A new chairman will be appointed thereafter, with input from the reconstituted board.

Global brewing powerhouse
Headquartered in Leuven, Belgium, AB InBev operates one of the world’s most extensive beverage portfolios, with more than 400 beer brands including Budweiser, Corona, Stella Artois and Michelob Ultra. The company, listed on multiple exchanges including Euronext Brussels, the New York Stock Exchange and the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, reported revenue of $59.3 billion in 2025 and has a current capitalization of R2.1 trillion ($122.51 billion).

With operations spanning over 40 countries and a workforce of approximately 137,000 employees, AB InBev remains a dominant force in the global brewing industry. Barrington’s departure signals a governance transition as the company prepares for its next phase of leadership and growth.
