BIM nears 1,000 stores in Morocco after record expansion

Turkey’s discount retail giant BİM is nearing a key milestone in Morocco, where its store network is approaching 1,000 locations, underscoring the country’s growing role in its international business.

The expansion reflects broader shifts in Morocco’s consumer market.

Rising living costs and steady urban growth are pushing more shoppers toward low-price retailers, creating room for chains that focus on affordability and efficiency.

BIM has steadily built its presence by opening smaller stores in densely populated areas, offering a limited range of essential goods at competitive prices.

The approach has helped it win over cost-conscious households and maintain consistent growth.

In 2025, the company opened 144 new outlets in Morocco, its largest annual increase in the country.

That brought its total to 933 stores, leaving it within reach of the 1,000 mark, which it is expected to pass in the first half of 2026.

Morocco leads BIM’s expansion

Morocco now stands out as one of BIM’s most important markets outside Turkey.

The chain’s network in the country grew by about 18% last year, compared with a more modest expansion in Egypt, where it added 27 stores.

The stronger performance in Morocco reflects a well-developed logistics network, a growing urban customer base, and steady demand for low-cost groceries.

At the same time, competition is increasing. Chains such as Kazyon and Supeco are also expanding, aiming to capture a share of the discount segment.

Backing and operations

BIM’s Moroccan unit is partly owned by Helios Investment Partners, which holds a 35% stake.

Since joining in 2021, the investor has supported store rollouts and improvements in supply chain operations.

The business now runs four logistics centers and employs about 7,100 people across the country, making it one of the larger retail employers in Morocco.

Focus on efficiency and standards

Globally, BIM operates more than 14,000 stores, most of them in Turkey.

Its model centers on a limited product range, fast stock turnover and a strong focus on private-label goods to keep prices low.

In Morocco, the company is also paying more attention to environmental and workplace standards.

In 2025, it introduced a framework covering customer service, supply chains and employee welfare.

As the store count edges closer to 1,000, Morocco is becoming a key test case for how BIM can scale its model across other African markets while maintaining steady growth.
