Sun King-Ethiopia $150 million solar energy expansion Deal

Sun King, the world’s leading off-grid solar energy company, is doubling down on Africa’s fast-growing renewable energy market, committing up to $150 million to scale solar energy solutions in Ethiopia, one of the continent’s largest untapped off-grid electricity markets.

The investment, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ethiopian Investment Commission, underscores rising global interest in clean energy investment in Africa as demand for reliable, affordable power accelerates.

Ethiopia emerges as key solar growth market

The agreement, signed during the Invest in Ethiopia High-Level Business Forum, marks Sun King’s strategic entry into Ethiopia’s energy access expansion drive.

With more than half of the population still lacking reliable electricity, the country is increasingly viewed as a high-growth frontier for solar home systems and distributed renewable energy.

Backed by government support, the company plans to begin operations immediately, leveraging fast-track regulatory approvals, business licensing, and access to key public and private sector partners.

Sun King’s planned investment through 2030 will fund the deployment of solar home systems and solar inverter solutions targeting over 2 million households and small businesses. The move aligns with Ethiopia’s National Electrification Plan and broader push to scale clean energy access nationwide.

A local subsidiary in Addis Ababa will anchor operations, supported by a growing workforce spanning engineering, logistics, and field distribution.

The company also plans to build an extensive last-mile network of agents to deliver and maintain systems in rural and underserved communities, key to unlocking last-mile energy access in Africa.

Pay-As-You-Go model drives affordability

Central to Sun King’s expansion is its Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) solar financing model, a fast-growing trend across Africa’s fintech-powered energy sector. The model allows customers to pay for solar systems in small, flexible installments via mobile money, lowering barriers to entry and accelerating adoption.

This approach is expected to play a critical role in advancing Ethiopia’s Mission 300 Compact, which targets universal electricity access through a mix of grid and off-grid solutions.

Leadership signals confidence in Ethiopia’s energy transition

Sun King Chief Operating Officer, Kota Kojima described Ethiopia as a “high-potential energy market,” highlighting the company’s urgency to scale operations and deliver affordable solar power to millions.

Dr. Zeleke Temesgen, Commissioner, Ethiopian Investment Commission emphasized that the partnership reflects Ethiopia’s openness to foreign direct investment in renewable energy and its commitment to accelerating sustainable development goals through private-sector collaboration.

Scaling across Africa’s clean energy landscape

Founded in 2007, Sun King has grown into a dominant player in the off-grid solar industry, delivering solar kits, lanterns, and home systems to more than 100 million users across Africa and Asia.

The company currently operates in 14 countries, deploying over 350,000 solar products monthly, a sharp increase driven by surging demand for clean, affordable electricity.

Ethiopia now sits at the center of Sun King’s long-term strategy to reach 200 million people by 2030, as the company races to deploy more than 50 million solar units and add significant solar generation capacity across emerging markets.

For investors and policymakers alike, the move signals a broader shift: Africa’s solar energy sector is rapidly transitioning from niche to mainstream, with Ethiopia poised to become one of its most consequential growth engines.
