Ibrahim Sagna, executive chairman of Silverbacks Holdings, is emerging as one of Africa’s most influential dealmakers, building a portfolio valued at more than $10 billion across fintech, media, and sports.

With nearly three decades spanning the International Monetary Fund, African Export-Import Bank and Africa Finance Corporation, the Senegalese financier has structured billions in cross-border transactions.

Now, through Mauritius-based Silverbacks, Sagna is backing high-growth startups including Flutterwave, Wave and Moove, positioning the firm at the center of Africa’s next generation of globally competitive companies.

Building a $10 billion investment platform
Founded in 2019 and headquartered in Mauritius, Silverbacks was designed as more than a traditional investment firm. It is a hybrid platform, bridging venture capital, private equity, and cultural asset investing, focused on backing what Sagna calls “Africa-born champions.” Since becoming Executive Chairman in late 2022, he has sharpened the firm’s strategy, positioning it as a growth engine for scalable, globally competitive African businesses.

His firm which began investing with a total capital of around $5 million now has a portfolio which includes a basketball franchise, media platforms, a mobility FinTech backed by Uber called Moove, and two unicorns, Flutterwave and Wave with a combined valuation of over $10 billion and an average valuation of $56 million, generating returns of three to 73 times the initial capital.

Building platforms, not portfolios: Silverbacks’ rise across sectors
Silverbacks Holdings, a private capital allocator dedicated to supporting the growth of African-related businesses in the tech, media, sports, and entertainment sectors, has rapidly expanded its footprint in sectors often overlooked by traditional investors but increasingly central to Africa’s economic future. While the firm maintains a broad network of direct and indirect investments, its core capital is concentrated in roughly 14 high-growth companies with a combined valuation exceeding $10 billion.

Its fintech and commerce bets, spanning companies like LemFi, OmniRetail, and Mono, have become critical drivers of value creation. The firm’s investment philosophy prioritizes platform dominance and scalability, backing companies capable of transforming fragmented markets into structured, high-growth ecosystems.

This strategy has delivered measurable results. With ten profitable exits to date, Silverbacks is emerging as one of the continent’s most consistent growth investors. Its ninth exit, announced at the African Business Media Innovators (ABMI) in Livingstone, Zambia, came through a partial divestment in OmniRetail, generating a fivefold return on invested capital. Earlier, its stake in LemFi delivered an exceptional 29x return, underscoring the firm’s ability to identify and scale breakout companies.

In January 2026, Silverbacks, a Mauritius-based alternative investment firm selectively targeting high-growth opportunities, secured its tenth exit following the $40 million acquisition of Nigerian open-banking startup Mono by Flutterwave, a deal that brought together two portfolio companies and reinforced its ecosystem-driven investment model.

From fintech to fandom: Expanding into sports and cultural capital
Beyond technology, Sagna is pioneering a distinctive approach to investing in Africa’s creative economy. Through Silverbacks, he is building exposure to sports, media, and entertainment, treating them not as peripheral sectors but as scalable, revenue-generating asset classes. Sagna is also part of the Global Sports Summit, organized by the Sports Leadership Institute in July 2023

The firm’s partnership with DAZN, backed by Saudi Arabia’s SURJ, signals its ambition to elevate African sports onto the global stage. One of its flagship initiatives includes promoting traditional boxing events such as Dambe, with a major showcase held in Abuja alongside Afreximbank’s annual meetings.

Sagna has also revealed that the National Basketball Association has opened discussions with Silverbacks around acquiring a franchise in its expanding African ecosystem, a move that could position the firm at the forefront of sports ownership on the continent.

Ecosystem architect: Connecting capital, culture, and global markets
What sets Sagna apart is not just his investment track record, but his ability to connect ecosystems. His strategy integrates infrastructure (fintech and commerce), distribution (payments and media), and culture (sports and entertainment) into a unified investment thesis designed to unlock long-term value. His board includes Nigerian singer and songwriter Oluwatosin Oluwole Ajibade, known by the stage name Mr Eazi, who is also an investor in Cape Town Tigers, launched in 2019.

This approach is rooted in his institutional background, where he developed a deep understanding of capital flows, market infrastructure, and cross-border investment dynamics. Today, that experience is reflected in Silverbacks’ ability to bridge African innovation with global capital, from Gulf investors to diaspora networks.

Shaping Africa’s next economic frontier
As consolidation accelerates across fintech and digital commerce, Silverbacks’ portfolio-driven strategy suggests further exits are likely. But beyond financial returns, Sagna’s broader vision is clear: to ensure Africa not only produces talent and innovation but also owns the platforms, intellectual property, and distribution channels that define global markets.

In doing so, Ibrahim Sagna is redefining what it means to be an African investor, moving beyond traditional sectors and into the frontier of digital infrastructure and cultural capital.

His journey reflects a deeper shift underway across the continent: one where finance, technology, and creativity converge to build globally relevant enterprises. And at the center of that transformation, Sagna stands as both architect and catalyst.
