Botselo Shoprite maize partnership

South Africa’s domestic staple food sector is set to benefit from a major collaboration between Botselo Mills, a family-owned maize processor based in Delareyville, and Shoprite Group, Africa’s largest food retailer.

The partnership, which is set to scale Botselo’s production and distribution nationwide, is expected to bolster the availability and accessibility of maize products across the country, reinforcing critical food supply chains.

Scaling production to meet national demand
Through the partnership, Botselo Mills now supplies over 120 tonnes of maize products each month to more than 1,176 Shoprite and Usave outlets.

For a company that began with small-scale local deliveries, this represents a structural shift from regional supplier to national processor.

The move demonstrates how integrating local manufacturers into large retail networks can enhance food security and stabilize supply for households nationwide.

Private-label production and distribution efficiency
Beyond volume growth, the collaboration extends to private-label production. Botselo now packages maize products under Shoprite’s Ritebrand and Usave’s Ubrand labels, embedding the mill further into the retailer’s value chain.

Access to Shoprite’s centralized distribution network allows Botselo to reach consumers from Cape Town to Musina efficiently, minimizing logistical constraints and ensuring consistent product availability.

Driving economic and rural development
Founded in 1982 and modernized after relocating to Delareyville in 2008, Botselo Mills has expanded its operations and workforce significantly.

The company now employs 563 staff, supporting local economic activity in a rural district where agro-processing is a primary employer.

Packaging innovations, such as 2.5kg maize packs, further improve transport efficiency and reduce plastic use, reflecting a commitment to sustainable production practices.

A model for national food security
The Botselo–Shoprite partnership underscores the impact that coordinated retailer, supplier collaborations can have on national staple food supply chains.

By scaling production, streamlining distribution, and fostering sustainable practices, the initiative sets a benchmark for strengthening South Africa’s food security while supporting local industry growth.
