Egypt and Jordan are stepping up efforts to support small businesses and expand trade, as both countries look to open new channels for investment and strengthen economic links across the region.

The push brings together two key institutions — Egypt’s Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Development Agency (MSMEDA) and the Jordan Enterprise Development Corporation (JEDCO) — at a time when governments are paying closer attention to the role of small firms in driving jobs and exports.

In both countries, small and medium-sized enterprises account for the bulk of businesses and employ a large share of the workforce.

Officials say helping these firms grow, export and attract investment is central to broader economic plans.

The closer cooperation also reflects a wider shift across the Middle East and North Africa, where governments are seeking to expand trade within the region and support local industries.

Focus on market access and investment

Recent meetings brought together officials from both sides, alongside representatives from investment, trade and regulatory agencies, to address barriers facing small businesses.

Discussions centered on improving market access, easing trade procedures and helping firms better understand regulatory requirements.

Officials also explored expanding opportunities in free zones, simplifying industrial licensing and encouraging joint manufacturing.

The aim is to make it easier for businesses to move goods, set up operations and form partnerships across borders, particularly in sectors where both countries have complementary strengths.

Bassel Rahmi, CEO of MSMEDA, said the agency is working to strengthen cooperation with regional partners to support small businesses and expand trade.

He said closer ties with Jordan could help create jobs and give entrepreneurs more room to grow, adding that efforts are underway to open more channels for cooperation and investment.

Building links between small businesses

Plans include organizing joint exhibitions to showcase products and connect businesses with partners and investors.

Officials also want to improve networking among small firms and help them integrate into supply chains.

Rahmi said clearer guidance on tax rules, customs procedures and registration requirements will be important in helping businesses navigate cross-border trade.

For Jordan, the discussions align with efforts to support exporters and improve competitiveness.

Dana Al-Zoubi, acting CEO of JEDCO, said the meetings reflect a commitment to closer economic ties with Egypt and stronger support for small businesses.

She said providing technical and financial support remains a priority, especially for companies preparing to enter new markets.

Push for stronger regional trade

Both sides say improving export readiness and reducing compliance hurdles will be key to increasing trade flows.

Greater awareness of rules and standards is also expected to help businesses avoid delays and reduce costs.

As Egypt and Jordan deepen cooperation, officials see small businesses playing a larger role in trade between the two countries and across the region.
