Tanzania is moving forward with plans to build a Green International Airport in the heart of the Serengeti, aiming to elevate the country’s aviation and tourism infrastructure while embracing sustainable development.
The long-anticipated Serengeti International Airport will be funded through the 2025/26 national budget, with Tsh 3 billion ($1.1 million) allocated for a detailed feasibility study and initial works, according to Transport Minister Prof. Makame Mbarawa.
“The airport will preserve the Serengeti’s ecosystem while facilitating tourism access,” Mbarawa said during his May 15 budget presentation to Parliament.
The facility is designed to meet global green standards and will serve as a key regional hub with direct links to other major airports in Tanzania.
Driving growth through aviation and sustainability
Positioned near one of Africa’s most iconic wildlife reserves, the Serengeti International Airport is expected to significantly boost tourism and regional economic development.
With millions visiting Tanzania’s northern safari circuit annually, the project supports the government’s broader strategy to increase international air connectivity and strengthen tourism infrastructure.
Officials say the new airport will also catalyze foreign investment in transport, hospitality, and logistics across the northern corridor. “It will open up access for trade, tourism, and investment in northern Tanzania,” said Mbarawa.
The airport forms part of Tanzania’s national aviation master plan, which prioritizes green construction, energy efficiency, and environmentally conscious infrastructure.

Part of a larger National aviation overhaul
Tanzania’s aviation ambitions go far beyond the Serengeti. In its 2025/26 budget, the Ministry of Transport has earmarked funds for upgrades to Mwanza, Arusha, Mtwara, Bukoba, and Kilimanjaro airports.
A major Tsh 35 billion ($13 million) allocation will support upgrades at Kilimanjaro International Airport, a key hub for northern Tanzania and international tourists.
Separately, Tanzania secured Tsh 80.12 billion ($29.7 million) in French financing to expand Terminal II of Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) in Dar es Salaam.
These investments align with the government’s goal to improve air safety, expand passenger capacity, and increase operating efficiency nationwide.
Outlook: Green Airport to anchor eco-tourism and trade
The Serengeti International Airport is poised to become a strategic asset for Tanzania’s economy.
Its development reflects a growing global demand for eco-tourism and sustainable infrastructure.
If implemented successfully, the airport could become a benchmark for low-carbon air travel in Africa, supporting both conservation goals and economic growth.
