Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, is preparing to open its first branded stores in South Africa before the end of 2025, marking a significant expansion of the U.S. retail giant’s footprint in Africa

The move positions Walmart to tap into South Africa’s growing consumer market, where rising demand for affordable groceries, household goods, and technology is drawing global interest.

The launch follows Walmart’s Africa Growth Summit held in April, where the company engaged suppliers from 12 countries and recruited small and medium-sized enterprises across the continent.

Global retail power meets local market needs

The retailer plans to stock its South African outlets with a wide selection of fresh groceries, household essentials, apparel, electronics, and locally sourced products, signaling a push to blend global scale with regional relevance.

According to Kath McLay, Walmart International’s president and CEO, the new stores will be designed to prioritize customer convenience, featuring bright lighting, wide aisles, and a mix of leading international and South African brands.

“Our goal is to deliver a shopping experience that reflects the aspirations of South African consumers while creating opportunities for local suppliers,” McLay said.

While this will be Walmart’s first official branded entry into South Africa, the company is no stranger to the market. Walmart already owns 100% of Massmart, the operator of major retail chains such as Makro, Game, and Builders Warehouse.

The U.S. retailer first bought a 51% stake in Massmart in 2010 and took full ownership in 2022, later delisting the company from the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.

Massmart CEO Miles van Rensburg described the launch as a milestone for South Africa’s retail sector. “We’re excited to introduce the Walmart brand directly to South African customers, associates, and communities,” he said. “By listening and working together, we aim to deliver lasting value and a world-class retail experience.”

Walmart’s Africa expansion gains fresh momentum

Walmart operates more than 10,750 stores in 19 countries worldwide and generated $629 billion (R11.9 trillion) in revenue in fiscal 2025.

The company’s entry into South Africa with branded outlets adds fresh momentum to its African strategy and highlights growing global competition in one of the continent’s largest retail markets.
