  • Tourvest operates across travel management, hotels, duty-free retail and foreign exchange services.
  • Gumede-led group spans Africa, Europe, India and the Caribbean with over 60 brands.
  • Integrated structure cushions earnings, blending corporate travel, leisure tourism and airport retail.

Tourvest, Southern Africa’s largest and most diversified tourism group, stands as an integrated tourism powerhouse, woven into the fabric of the continent’s travel, hospitality and retail landscape.

Notably, the Johannesburg-based group operates across the full spectrum of tourism services, from travel management and inbound experiences to accommodation, duty-free retail and foreign exchange, under more than 60 leading brands and employing over 8,000 people globally.

Ownership and origins of Tourvest
Tourvest’s roots trace back to a 1997 consolidation of established tourism companies and its subsequent listing on the Johannesburg Securities Exchange.

In 2008 it was acquired by a Black Economic Empowerment consortium that included the Industrial Development Corporation, Old Mutual and TVT Africa Tourism Holdings, a vehicle controlled by Guma Group, the diversified industrial group chaired by South African entrepreneur Robert Gumede.

Robert Gumede’s role and strategic control
Under Gumede’s stewardship as Chairman, Tourvest has evolved into a truly global player with operations in Southern, East and West Africa. In addition Tourvest’s footholds in the United Kingdom, Europe, India and the Caribbean.

The company’s high-touch travel services division manages business and leisure itineraries through digital platforms and bespoke solutions, serving millions of travellers and corporate clients.

Tourvest’s business divisions
Tourvest’s destination management arm is a key driver of inbound tourism to Africa, curating bespoke travel experiences for source markets across Europe, North America and Asia. However, its accommodations division operates respected brands including aha Hotels & Lodges and Wild Horizons safari lodges.

The group’s travel retail and duty-free business has also carved a niche, providing airport retail and inflight services, recently expanding through strategic partnerships with global names like Lagardère Travel Retail to elevate traveler experiences and capture growing duty-free spending.

Geographic footprint and global reach
As a component of Gumede’s broader Guma Group platform, alongside ICT, mining, energy and infrastructure, Tourvest serves as a flagship in tourism, blending African heritage with global standards.

Its multi-division structure offers resilience against market volatility, ensuring that whether travellers seek corporate travel solutions, safari adventures, airport retailing or financial services, Tourvest remains a nucleus of Southern Africa’s tourism economy.
