South Africa’s Greater Kruger region welcomes a fresh addition to its luxury safari landscape. 18 On The Hill, which opened in August 2025, offers a new perspective on bush adventures, combining elevated views, intimate design, and immersive wildlife experiences.
Part of the unfenced Greater Kruger ecosystem, wildlife moves freely across reserve boundaries, with the terrain itself shaping every experience. The lodge sits above the bush, offering sweeping views of open savannah, riverine corridors along the Olifants River, and a sense of space that feels natural rather than imposed.

Luxury and Intentional Design
In the months since opening, 18 On The Hill earned a 5-star grading, a milestone reflecting the quality of its offering. Yet the lodge does not feel rushed. Its atmosphere is modern, calm, and quietly confident, with every element carefully considered.
The property includes nine luxury tented suites on raised platforms. At 100 square meters each, the suites feature private plunge pools, outdoor showers, and interiors inspired by the surrounding landscape, balancing comfort with a strong connection to nature.

11,000 hectares for game drives
Beyond the suites, the lodge encourages guests to engage with the environment. Game drives cover over 11,000 hectares, including stretches along the Olifants River. Big Five sightings are common, but the bush reveals itself in subtler ways: early-morning light over the plains, water shaping wildlife movement, and the rich variety of birdlife.
Birding is a standout experience. Species such as Pel’s Fishing Owl highlight the ecological depth of the area, offering surprises beyond the classic safari checklist.

Inclusive Safari lodge with Kosher meals
Back at the lodge, stays are fully inclusive, with meals prepared on-site. A separate kosher kitchen supervised by a qualified Mashgiach ensures both quality and inclusivity, making the lodge a rare option for kosher safari travelers.
Evenings unfold in multiple ways: night drives through the bush, time around the fire, or quiet moments on private decks as nocturnal sounds emerge. Guided bush walks, stargazing, and sound-focused experiences offer slower, more intimate ways to connect with the wild.
The lodge is located on a community-owned reserve. Guest stays support Balule’s conservation programs, including wildlife monitoring, rhino protection, and habitat management – ensuring the lodge contributes to both the land and local community.

18 On The Hill targets 2026 launch
Plans are underway for a five-bedroom private villa opening in 2026, complete with its own guide and chef, offering families and groups a more secluded safari experience.
For now, 18 On The Hill continues shaping its identity, refining its offerings, and settling into the rhythms of the land it overlooks. With its elevated perspective, intentional design, and commitment to conservation, 18 On The Hill is a new entrant worth watching in the Greater Kruger luxury safari scene.
