Perched on the edge of Volcanoes National Park in northwestern Rwanda, Singita Kwitonda Lodge is redefining high-end African safari travel with a focus on bespoke service, immersive experience, and conservation-minded design.

A Gorilla-centric sanctuary with global appeal

Opened in August 2019 and named after Kwitonda, a legendary silverback gorilla whose name means “to be humble” in Kinyarwanda, the lodge occupies 178 scenic acres adjacent to one of Africa’s most prized biodiversity hotspots.

Unlike traditional game-drive lodges, Singita Kwitonda channels its prime location toward mountain gorilla trekking, a bucket-list adventure for affluent travelers and wildlife enthusiasts alike, placing guests within hours of misty forests where endangered gorilla families roam.

Design meets sustainability

Singita’s vision here goes beyond luxury. The architectural narrative blends contemporary comfort with deep cultural resonance: volcanic rock and handmade clay bricks, woven ceilings by local artisans, and organic materials sourced from the Musanze district anchor every structure to the landscape it inhabits.

Interiors are minimalist yet rich in texture, reflecting Rwanda’s earthy palette and celebrating craftsmanship from surrounding communities. Sustainability isn’t an afterthought — it’s woven into the property’s DNA, from construction materials to farm-to-table ingredients harvested in on-site gardens.

Exclusive luxury, rugged backdrop

The lodge comprises eight private suites and a four-bedroom villa, Kataza House, each featuring indoor and outdoor fireplaces, heated plunge pools, and expansive windows framing Rwanda’s dramatic volcanic peaks.

These spaces are designed as wellness retreats where heated baths, in-room massage areas, and fire-lit verandas blur the line between indoor sanctuary and wild frontier. Culinary experiences span seasonal dishes rooted in local produce to curated wine tastings in an intimate cellar setting.

Experiential safari beyond game drives

What sets Singita Kwitonda apart from many safari lodges is its experiential programming. Outdoor fire pits and communal lounges foster social connection, while guided treks, from gorilla and golden monkey tracking to forest walks,  ensure that each stay is both exhilarating and grounding.

The lodge also integrates cultural immersion and conservation insight, offering guests the chance to visit community projects and learn about ongoing efforts to preserve Rwanda’s unique ecosystems.
