South Africa’s Kalahari Desert is set for a measured upgrade as South African National Parks (SANParks) prepares to renovate one of its most sought-after safari bases.

Nossob Rest Camp, located inside Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, will undergo maintenance and improvement works beginning Feb. 25, 2026.

The project is expected to last about four months. While construction will take place within the camp, the park itself will remain open to visitors, and existing bookings will be honored.

SANParks said travelers may notice construction vehicles and some noise, but core services will continue operating.

For tour operators and independent travelers planning South Africa safari trips, the timing matters.

Nossob is one of the park’s most popular camps, especially during peak wildlife seasons when sightings along the dry riverbed are at their best.

Set along the Nossob River, the camp is known for close-range encounters with Kalahari lions, cheetahs and leopards.

Its remote setting and wide red dunes draw wildlife photographers and self-drive safari enthusiasts looking for a quieter alternative to more crowded reserves.

What visitors can expect during the upgrade

The renovation will focus on upgrading campsite ablution facilities, improving premium camping stands and refurbishing the well-known riverfront chalets.

The goal, according to SANParks, is to improve comfort while keeping the camp’s character intact.

Importantly, the wildlife experience that defines Kalahari travel will not change.

Spanning nearly 40,000 square kilometers across South Africa and Botswana, the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park remains one of Africa’s largest protected areas.

It is widely regarded for its black-maned lions, large herds of springbok and stark desert landscapes.

Travel advisers may also suggest stays at Twee Rivieren Rest Camp or Mata Mata Rest Camp, both established bases that provide access to prime game-viewing routes.

Strengthening South Africa’s Safari Offering

Once completed, the upgraded facilities are expected to strengthen the park’s appeal to both domestic and international travelers.

The improvements reflect ongoing efforts to maintain infrastructure in key conservation areas while supporting South Africa’s tourism sector.

The wilderness remains unchanged, even as the camp prepares for a more comfortable future

For visitors planning 2026 itineraries, the message is straightforward: the wilderness remains unchanged, even as the camp prepares for a more comfortable future.
