Luxury tourism in East Africa is drawing renewed interest from global hotel operators as international travel continues to recover.

Investors are increasingly targeting Indian Ocean beach destinations alongside the region’s established safari circuit.

Tanzania is emerging as a key beneficiary. Known for Serengeti safaris and Zanzibar’s beaches, the country is now attracting fresh capital aimed at broadening its high-end hospitality offering.

Against that backdrop, Minor Hotels has signed a new resort under its NH Collection brand on Pemba Island, deepening its presence in East Africa.

The Bangkok-based group says the project reflects its focus on expanding in markets where demand for luxury travel and business tourism is rising.

The property, to be known as NH Collection Pemba Island Resort, will be developed with Infinity Developments, the firm behind Anantara Zanzibar Resort & Residences.

The 145-room resort is scheduled to open in February 2030.

Expanding Tanzania’s luxury offering

Located a short drive from Pemba Airport, the resort will include guestrooms, suites and private villas overlooking the coastline.

Developers say the design will reflect the island’s natural setting while offering the services expected of an international luxury brand.

The project will also feature facilities for meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions, commonly known as MICE.

That addition positions the resort to serve both leisure travelers and corporate clients seeking venues in East Africa.

Tourism officials have long sought to reduce reliance on safari travel by encouraging investment in beach resorts and conference infrastructure.

Projects such as this are expected to create jobs during construction and operation, while supporting local suppliers in hospitality and transport.

Design blends island nature with the standards of a global luxury hotel brand.

Focus on sustainable tourism

Minor Hotels and Infinity Developments say environmental standards will guide construction, with measures aimed at protecting Pemba Island’s marine and coastal ecosystems.

Sustainable design has become a priority for many international travelers, particularly in environmentally sensitive destinations.

Minor Hotels and Infinity Developments will use eco-friendly design to protect Pemba Island’s coast.

For Minor Hotels, the signing strengthens its African portfolio and aligns with broader growth plans across the continent.

For Tanzania, the new resort adds to efforts to position the country as a destination for both luxury holidays and business events, widening the base of its tourism economy
