South African-British billionaire Clive Calder has encountered a notable dip in his net worth, witnessing a decline of nearly $200 million since the start of the year 2026.

Calder’s wealth dips: $170 million loss trims net worth below $9 billion in 2026
A recent $170-million decline in the fortune of Clive Calder has pared his net worth from $9.15 billion to $8.98 billion in 2026, reflecting softer valuations across his privately held assets.

The downturn is tied to fluctuations in the value of Calder’s long-held investments, many of which trace back to the proceeds from the landmark sale of Zomba Music Group to Bertelsmann for $2.7 billion in 2002.

While the transaction cemented his status as one of the music industry’s most successful entrepreneurs, shifts in broader asset markets have weighed modestly on his wealth this year.

Despite the dip, Calder remains one of Southern Africa’s most influential billionaires, alongside Nicky Oppenheimer and Natie Kirsh. The South African-born magnate, who resides in the Cayman Islands, continues to rank among the world’s richest individuals.

Clive Calder slips to 401st among world’s richest
Clive Calder has fallen to 401st on the global rich list, a modest retreat that does little to diminish his enduring clout in the music industry. The South African-born dealmaker remains a defining force, underpinned by a fortune built on sharp commercial instincts. His business acumen was evident in the creation of Zomba, a global powerhouse that was acquired for $2.74 billion in 2002 by the German-based media group Bertelsmann.

Beyond music, the South African billionaire and his son, Keith Calder, invested $46 million in Cloud Imperium Games (CIG), the studio behind Star Citizen. This investment secured approximately 10% of CIG’s shares, providing a significant financial boost.

In addition to his business ventures, Calder is a philanthropist and founder of ELMA Foundations, one of Africa’s largest private non-profits. The foundation invests in organizations dedicated to children’s healthcare, education, humanitarian relief, social enterprises, and youth development through music. Calder’s enduring fortune underscores the lasting impact of his music empire, with Zomba’s rise into a global powerhouse standing as the cornerstone of his wealth, even as short-term valuation swings reshape his billionaire ranking.
