Cross Switch has launched Absa Pay in South Africa, expanding its payments offering as demand grows for secure, bank-authenticated checkout options across the country’s fast-developing digital economy.

The rollout gives merchants a new way to process payments that keeps transactions within a trusted banking environment.

The launch comes as South Africa’s e-commerce market continues to expand, supported by rising smartphone use, improved digital infrastructure and broader acceptance of online shopping.

As more consumers move to digital channels, businesses are under pressure to offer payment options that are both seamless and secure.

At the same time, fraud prevention has become a growing priority for merchants and financial service providers.

This has increased interest in payment systems that reduce exposure of sensitive data while maintaining a smooth checkout experience that does not interrupt sales.

Bank-linked checkout system

With Absa Pay, customers selecting the option at checkout are redirected to a secure Absa interface to approve the transaction directly with their bank.

After authentication, they are returned to the merchant’s website to complete the purchase.

The process keeps sensitive financial data within the bank’s environment, reducing the risk of fraud while strengthening customer trust in digital transactions.

Absa developed the solution to support fintech platforms and digital businesses through secure API-based connections that allow direct communication with its banking infrastructure.

Benefits for merchants and users

For merchants using Cross Switch, the integration delivers real-time payment confirmation, automated reconciliation and more predictable settlement processes.

These features are particularly useful for businesses managing growing transaction volumes across multiple channels.

The system can be activated with minimal technical changes, allowing merchants to add Absa Pay alongside existing payment methods without disrupting current operations.

The system can be enabled easily, letting merchants add Absa Pay without disruption.

Growing shift in payment behavior

Bank-authenticated, account-to-account payments are becoming more common in South Africa as consumers increasingly prefer direct bank-based transactions over traditional card payments.

The launch reinforces Cross Switch’s focus on strengthening connections between banks,

fintechs and merchants, as competition intensifies in Africa’s digital payments sector.
