Hyde, the boutique hotel brand known for its relaxed, music-led hospitality, makes its African debut in Rosebank, Johannesburg. The brand first opened on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles in 2005 and has since expanded to cities including Miami, Dubai, Ibiza and London.

Its arrival in Johannesburg brings a familiar mix of urban comfort and informal design to one of the city’s most active business and lifestyle districts.

Rosebank setting with a creative pulse

The hotel is located inside The Bank, a prominent building in Rosebank’s skyline. From the entrance, the design reflects Johannesburg’s creative community. Local artists and craftspeople shape much of the interior, giving the space a layered, lived-in feel rather than a staged hotel aesthetic.

Across public areas, ceramic pieces, beadwork and contemporary South African art sit alongside bold canvases and sculptural installations. The result is a setting that encourages guests to slow down and take in the details rather than move quickly through the space.

Rosebank itself adds to that rhythm. The neighbourhood is known for its mix of galleries, cafés, retail spaces and street activity, with the Rosebank Gautrain station about a three-minute walk from the hotel and O.R. Tambo International Airport roughly 35 minutes away by road.

Hyde Johannesburg: 131 rooms total

Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank has 131 rooms, ranging from compact king rooms to a 52-square-metre Headliner Suite. Interiors are designed for ease and rest, with blackout curtains, quality linens, high-speed Wi-Fi, stocked minibars and in-room steamers provided as standard.

The hotel gym operates around the clock and includes three training spaces: strength, cardio and a quieter studio for stretching and yoga sessions, often timed with sunset views over the city.

Sustainability is a core part of the building’s operations. The property holds Green Key certification, an internationally recognised eco-label.

Solar panels, LED lighting, heat recovery systems and a borehole that supplies a portion of the hotel’s water needs all form part of its resource strategy. Management describes it as an ongoing operating approach rather than a standalone initiative.

Proud Mary wins 2025 Luxe Award

Dining is anchored by Proud Mary, a restaurant and bar that has become a local draw for Rosebank’s dining crowd.

The venue offers a mix of boutique wines, small plates and grilled dishes in a mid-century inspired space that shifts between lively and relaxed throughout the day. It was named Hotel Restaurant of the Year at the 2025 Luxe Awards in South Africa.

Mornings begin at Proud CoWee, the hotel’s coffee bar, which focuses on espresso-based drinks and fresh pastries.

For evenings, Nine Lives sits between the fourth and fifth floors as a hidden speakeasy-style bar. It serves Asian-inspired dishes and offers a selection of international spirits in a dim, retro setting that contrasts with the brighter public areas below.

Hyde Johannesburg blends work leisure social

Hyde Johannesburg is designed to move easily between work, rest and social time. Workshop17, a co-working space on the first floor, supports business travellers and remote workers, reinforcing the hotel’s blend of hospitality and work-friendly design.

The overall experience is grounded, social and closely tied to Rosebank’s street life — a hotel shaped as much by its surroundings as by its brand identity.
