Newmark Hotels & Reserves is expanding its presence in Africa’s luxury tourism market with the launch of Thitaka River Lodge, a tented safari camp set to open in July in Namibia’s Bwabwata National Park.

The project comes as demand for high-end, nature-based travel continues to rise, drawing global investors and operators to the continent.

The lodge is located in the Zambezi region along the Kwando River, an area known for its rich wildlife and relatively low visitor numbers compared with more established safari destinations.

For Newmark, the location offers a chance to build in a quieter part of Southern Africa while still appealing to travelers seeking premium safari experiences.

Namibia has become a key destination for eco-conscious tourism, supported by conservation policies and community-based models that protect wildlife while supporting local livelihoods.

That approach has helped the country stand out in a competitive safari market.

Newmark’s latest development reflects a broader plan to grow in selected African destinations, with a focus on design, location and community ties.

The company is positioning the lodge as both a high-end retreat and a gateway to one of the region’s most important wildlife corridors.

Remote setting with tailored access

Thitaka River Lodge is set within a forested elephant corridor, with accommodation options ranging from luxury tents to family units and private villas.

Each unit is built on raised decks to offer privacy and clear views of the surrounding landscape.

Reaching the lodge will involve a mix of road and air travel. Guests can arrive via a 280-kilometer road transfer or by private charter to an on-site airstrip.

Other routes include a three-hour drive from Kasane through Chobe National Park and the Botswana-Namibia border, or a shorter transfer from Katima Mulilo.

Safari experience and sustainable design

The lodge will offer a range of activities typical of the region, including game drives, river safaris, guided walks and birdwatching.

These experiences are built around the area’s biodiversity, which draws visitors year-round.

Dining will focus on seasonal, locally sourced ingredients, with some produce grown on-site in a herb and vegetable garden.

The property will also include a spa, adding to its appeal for travelers looking for both adventure and comfort.

Community ties and local impact

Newmark said the development will place a strong emphasis on working with nearby communities.

Locally made crafts will be sold at the lodge, providing an additional source of income for residents.

The project also incorporates low-impact construction methods and locally sourced materials, in line with industry efforts to reduce environmental impact while supporting local economies.

“Thitaka Lodge reflects our continued focus on creating experiences that are closely connected to the environment and the surrounding community,” said CEO Neil Markovitz.
