Kenyan businessman Evanson Njenga Kahihu, founder of Central Farmers Garage (CFG) and a leading Isuzu dealer, has died at 90 while receiving treatment at Nairobi Hospital. Njenga built CFG into one of Kenya’s most recognized automotive firms, specializing in commercial vehicle sales, spare parts, and bus body building.

Founded in 1982 in Kitale, the company expanded across Kenya, supporting the country’s transport sector with customized vehicles for public and private operators. Njenga’s death marks the end of a four-decade career that helped shape Kenya’s commercial vehicle distribution industry.

Building Kenya’s automotive distribution network

Founded in 1982 in Kitale, CFG began as an authorized dealer of Isuzu East Africa, supplying commercial vehicles and after-sales services. The company later expanded into body building, producing buses, minibuses, and specialized vehicles tailored to Kenya’s transport needs.

From its base in western Kenya, CFG grew operations into Nairobi, Bungoma, and Lodwar, strengthening its footprint across key transport corridors.

Expansion into bus and specialty vehicles

Under Njenga’s leadership, CFG evolved into a vertically integrated automotive services provider. Its body-building division became a key supplier to Kenya’s public transport sector, including matatus and long-distance buses.

The company’s ability to customize vehicles for local terrain and operating conditions positioned it as a preferred partner for transport operators.

Industry shifts reshape dealership landscape

Njenga’s death comes amid broader changes in Kenya’s automotive sector. Isuzu East Africa recently restructured its dealership network, ending long-standing partnerships and signaling a shift in distribution strategy.

These changes could reshape competition among dealers and create opportunities for consolidation within the market.

Legacy and succession outlook

As chairman and managing director, Njenga oversaw CFG’s expansion, workforce development, and strategic partnerships. His leadership helped position the company as a key player in Kenya’s commercial vehicle ecosystem.

Attention is now turning to succession planning within CFG and how the company will maintain its market position in a rapidly evolving automotive industry.

Njenga is expected to be buried on May 8, with family and associates gathering ahead of the funeral.
