ABB Ltd has completed a major crane drives modernization project at Dekheila Port in Egypt, in partnership with Al Ezz Dekheila Steel Company (EZDK), marking a push to improve operational efficiency and strengthen the country’s position as a regional logistics hub.

The project was executed through ABB Egypt’s Motion Services division and focused on upgrading crane operating systems with advanced drive technologies designed to enhance reliability, reduce downtime, and streamline port operations.

Boosting efficiency through smart retrofitting

Rather than replacing existing infrastructure, the modernization adopted a “smart retrofitting” approach, allowing the port to upgrade its systems while maintaining ongoing operations.

The upgrade introduced advanced monitoring tools that enable real-time performance tracking and predictive maintenance capabilities. This reduces unplanned outages while improving overall equipment efficiency and operational safety.

By extending the lifespan of existing assets, the project also supports cost-effective digital transformation in one of Egypt’s key logistics gateways.

Strengthening industrial sustainability

Speaking on the development, Eng. Mohamed Ismail, Motion Services Division Manager at ABB Egypt for North & Central Africa, said the collaboration reflects ABB’s long-term role in supporting Egypt’s industrial modernization agenda.

He noted that upgrading existing infrastructure in a smarter and more sustainable way helps customers unlock greater value while preparing for future operational demands.

The project aligns with broader efforts to support leaner and cleaner industrial operations by improving productivity, optimizing energy use, and enhancing safety standards across critical sectors.

ABB’s industrial footprint

ABB Ltd operates globally across electrification, automation, and motion technologies, supporting industries in improving efficiency and reducing environmental impact.

The company has built its reputation over more than a century of industrial innovation and continues to position itself as a key enabler of digital transformation in heavy industry.
