Zimbabwean businessman and investor John Moxon has emerged as a central figure behind the diversification and restructuring of Meikles Limited, one of Zimbabwe’s oldest and most diversified corporate groups.

Moxon, who has been associated with Meikles since 1970, has served in several leadership capacities including executive director and chairman, steering the group through decades of transformation. Under his oversight, the company expanded beyond its traditional retail base into hospitality, agriculture, mining-related interests and financial services, reinforcing its position as one of Zimbabwe’s most influential conglomerates.

Long-term shareholder with broad influence

Moxon holds a significant stake of over 10% in Meikles Limited, making him one of the group’s key shareholders and a notable figure on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange. His influence has extended beyond governance into strategic direction, particularly as Meikles deepened its presence across consumer-facing and export-linked sectors in Zimbabwe’s economy.

In July 2025, Moxon stepped down from the Meikles board following months of reported tensions between him and fellow directors. He subsequently transitioned to a directorship role within the group’s property subsidiary. Following his departure, Fayaz King was appointed acting chairman of Meikles’ board, effective July 3, 2025.

Building a diversified corporate footprint

Meikles Limited operates as a multi-sector group with interests spanning retail, hospitality, agriculture, real estate, and financial services, reflecting a long-term diversification strategy under its leadership structure.

One of its flagship businesses is TM Supermarkets, a joint venture formed in partnership with Pick n Pay Stores Limited in 1997. Meikles retains a 51% controlling stake, while Pick n Pay holds the remainder, positioning the chain as one of Zimbabwe’s most established retail networks.

In hospitality, the group operates the historic Victoria Falls Hotel, a landmark property originally established in 1904 and widely recognized for its colonial-era architecture and location within the Victoria Falls National Park. The hotel is managed under a partnership structure and remains one of Zimbabwe’s most prominent tourism assets.

The group also holds property assets through Thomas Meikle Properties, which has developed a portfolio of more than 20 properties across several Zimbabwean cities, supporting steady expansion in its real estate segment.

Agriculture and industrial exposure

A key industrial asset under the group is Tanganda Tea Company, the country’s largest tea and coffee producer. After a complex corporate restructuring history, Tanganda was relisted on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange in 2022, reinforcing its position as a key agricultural exporter.

The group’s operations also extend into security services through Meikles Guard Services, which provides protection for Meikles-owned assets including supermarkets, hotels and agricultural operations, supporting the group’s operational stability across its subsidiaries.

Philanthropy and broader economic impact

Beyond corporate leadership, Moxon has been associated with philanthropic activity spanning healthcare, education and social development initiatives in Zimbabwe, reflecting a broader engagement with community development alongside commercial operations.

Meikles Limited’s diversified portfolio under his long-standing influence has contributed to employment creation and value generation across multiple sectors of the Zimbabwean economy, particularly in retail, tourism and agriculture.
