Sun International Limited, a leading South African hospitality and leisure group, is set to roll out its online betting platform, SunBet, in Namibia, marking a fresh push into Africa’s fast-growing digital gaming market.

The move will position Namibia as the third African market for SunBet, underscoring the group’s strategy to deepen its presence in the continent’s expanding online sports betting and gaming sector.

Driving digital gaming expansion

SunBet will be powered by technology from Bede Gaming, enabling a full suite of digital betting and gaming services tailored to mobile-first users.

Chief Executive Officer Simon Gregory described the Namibian entry as a key milestone in the platform’s regional growth strategy. “Our growth across the continent is driven by a deep understanding of local markets and a focus on delivering a high-quality entertainment experience. Namibia is an exciting step for us as we extend the SunBet brand to a new audience with a dynamic and innovative offering,” Gregory said.

The expansion comes as operators increasingly target African markets, supported by rising smartphone penetration, improving internet connectivity, and growing demand for mobile-based entertainment.

Regional growth momentum

SunBet’s entry into Namibia follows its expansion into neighboring Botswana, where the company has reported strong growth in its online gaming segment.

The company noted that demand for mobile-first betting products and digital gaming services continues to drive growth across the region.

“We’ve invested in world-class technology and partnerships to ensure our offering remains fresh, exciting, and relevant. Our priority is to create a seamless, enjoyable experience across all devices, with something for every type of player,” Gregory added.

Localized strategy in Namibia

SunBet Namibia Country Manager Shafa Shaimemanya emphasized the importance of tailoring the platform to local preferences rather than applying a uniform regional model.

“There is no ‘one size fits all’ approach when it comes to Namibia. Our focus is on delivering an experience that resonates with local players while maintaining the quality and excitement that defines SunBet,” he said.

Strengthening Sun International’s portfolio

Founded in 1968 by the late Sol Kerzner, Sun International has become a leading gaming and hospitality player under Leeming’s leadership. The Namibian launch adds to Sun International’s growing digital gaming portfolio as the group seeks to diversify beyond its traditional casino, hotel, and resort operations.

With a market capitalization of approximately R12.1 billion ($745.46 million), the company operates a portfolio of gaming and hospitality assets across South Africa and Nigeria, while also providing management services within the broader gaming and hospitality industries.

SunBet’s expansion into Namibia is expected to intensify competition in the country’s online betting market, as operators race to capture rising consumer demand for digital gaming and sports betting platforms across Africa.
