Traxtion, one of Africa’s largest private rail freight operators, has completed an oversubscribed $86 million equity raise, strengthening its ambition to become the continent’s largest rail company as Africa’s transport and logistics sector enters a new phase of growth.

The capital injection follows the company’s R3.4 billion ($209 million) rolling stock investment program, which includes the acquisition of 46 locomotives and 920 wagons. The latest funding provides additional firepower for future expansion while enhancing freight capacity across key African trade corridors.

South Africa’s rail reform opens new opportunities

The fundraising comes at a pivotal moment for the regional rail industry. South Africa recently advanced rail sector liberalization after Transport Minister Barbara Creecy approved 11 train operating companies to access 41 rail routes previously dominated by state-owned Transnet.

The policy shift is expected to stimulate competition, improve freight efficiency, and attract fresh private-sector investment into rail infrastructure, one of Africa’s most critical economic bottlenecks.

Although Traxtion has yet to apply for operating slots, Chief Executive James Holley said the company is closely monitoring regulatory developments and could participate once greater clarity emerges regarding operator rights and obligations.

Betting on locomotives, jobs and local manufacturing

Traxtion’s fleet expansion remains on schedule, with the first new locomotives expected to enter service in March 2027. The program targets a minimum 60% local content requirement and is projected to support 662 direct jobs during manufacturing, refurbishment, and deployment.

According to Holley, the new funding will accelerate fleet modernization, refurbishment projects, supplier development initiatives, and operational expansion while strengthening local industrial capacity.

Building Africa’s freight future

Founded in 1987, Traxtion has built a reputation around extending the life cycle of rail assets through refurbishment, maintenance, leasing, and operational optimization. The company operates a 50,000-square-meter rail service hub in Rosslyn, South Africa, providing maintenance, overhaul, and technical support services.

Beyond equipment leasing, Traxtion offers full-maintenance locomotive solutions and accredited training programs for drivers, technicians, and apprentices.

As demand for efficient freight transportation rises across mining, manufacturing, and cross-border trade sectors, the company is positioning itself at the center of Africa’s rail logistics transformation.

With fresh capital secured and rail reforms gathering momentum, Traxtion’s latest investment push underscores growing confidence that rail will play a central role in unlocking Africa’s next wave of economic growth.
