Vivian Imerman, the South African-born multimillionaire businessman renowned for his outstanding achievements in the turnarounds of Del Monte and Whyte & Mackay. His visionary leadership has driven the remarkable growth of these companies over the past 35 years, turning each of them into a leading food and pharmaceutical company.

Imerman’s journey began in Johannesburg, where he earned a law degree before venturing into finance with Caedmon Group in London. His early exposure to risk management honed his financial acumen.

From his father’s chemical brokering company, he expanded into surplus chemicals and branded pharmaceuticals, later achieving a listing on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in 1987.

Further expansions included food distribution, acquiring assets from Nabisco and the Ferro chemical group. In 1993, Nabisco offered him the opportunity to purchase Del Monte International, resulting in the listing of three additional companies on the South African bourse.

In 1989, Imerman transformed Del Monte Foods and Whyte & Mackay, tripling profits through brand revitalization and strategic acquisitions.

His success led to the sale of Whyte & Mackay for 30-fold of his initial investment in 2001, affirming his prowess in premium consumer goods.

Establishing Vasari Global, he ventures into Africa and emerging markets, investing in Ethiopian breweries and South African spirits producers, showcasing his ambition for untapped opportunities in diverse markets.

Beyond qualitative impact, Imerman’s ventures boast impressive financial achievements. His turnaround of Del Monte significantly increased its profitability, and his sale of Whyte & Mackay generated massive returns. Today, Vasari Global manages over $250 million in assets, highlighting his continued entrepreneurial success.

Shore Africa identified and cataloged various companies and holdings linked to Imerman. Here are five companies where he holds direct or indirect ownership:

1. Vasari Global
Vasari, a multinational consumer goods company focusing on Africa and frontier markets, has expanded its business across Africa, Asia, and Europe for nearly 40 years. Under the leadership of Vivian Imerman, Vasari Global, the main holding and investment platform linked to Imerman, specializes in consumer goods investment, while Vasari Beverages is a key investor in frontier and emerging market alcoholic beverages. Between 2013 and 2018, Vasari invested over $250 million in capital. In 2019, they announced a $100 million capital raise, led by Pan-African investment bank RMB, aimed at doubling Dashen’s beer production capacity and tripling Rorank’s alcohol production capacity.

2. Vasari Beverages
Vasari Beverages operates as the beverage-focused arm of Vasari’s investment platform, concentrating on alcoholic drinks production, distribution, and brand development in African and frontier markets. The unit has been associated with investments in breweries and distilleries, including assets in East Africa. Its approach typically involves expanding production capacity, strengthening local distribution networks, and consolidating fragmented beverage markets. Vasari holds a controlling interest of about 98% in the Ethiopian offshore structure Dashen Brewery, also in East Africa’s Rorank Distillery, a major spirits production and distribution asset, among other expansions and investments in multiple African beverage markets.

3. Whyte & Mackay
Whyte & Mackay is a Scotch whisky producer formerly owned and led by Vivian Imerman during a major expansion and restructuring phase in the 2000s. In 2001, in London, Imerman, alongside Robert and Vincent Tchenguiz, acquired a minority stake in Kyndal, now Whyte and Mackay. By 2005, he increased his ownership to 60% from 35%, and together with the Tchenguiz brothers, acquired the remaining shares. As Chairman and CEO, Imerman transformed the Scotch whisky distiller into a globally recognized premium spirits brand, tripling its value in under five years through strategic rebranding and emphasizing its heritage and luxury appeal. In 2007, the company was sold to United Spirits Limited for £595 million (approximately $1 billion), with Imerman receiving £380 million ($500 million) in proceeds.

4. KWV Holdings

KWV Holdings is a historic South African wine and spirits group whose operational assets were at one point linked to investment activity involving Vivian Imerman’s wider beverage investment strategy. The portfolio includes wine production, brandy distillation, and established liquor brands within South Africa’s alcoholic beverage industry. Imerman’s involvement has been associated more with operational restructuring and asset control rather than broad public equity ownership of the listed entity. However, the exact structure and timing of control over specific KWV assets should be cross-checked with official corporate records for precision.

5. Del Monte Foods International
While at Del Monte Foods, Imerman spearheaded a comprehensive strategic review, leading to a new vision for the company. This included divesting peripheral businesses, acquiring Del Monte Philippines to secure production sources, restructuring the supply chain, revamping distribution strategies, and refreshing the management team. Following a three-year restructuring plan, the company rebounded to robust profitability. In 2001, Imerman orchestrated the sale of his Del Monte stake to Cirio for €600 million. Also, Del Monte Royal Holdings Limited, the parent company, holds a majority interest in Del Monte Royal Corporation Limited, which is shared by Anglo and the Imerman consortium. They own 60% of DMR Holdings, with Imerman retaining a 10% direct stake. DMR Holdings controls 51% of DMR Corporation, DMR Foods, and Raychem, a chemical manufacturing and trading company.

6. Royal Corporation
Vivian Imerman, chairman of Royal Corporation, bolstered his consortium’s initial 77% stake in Royal Holdings with an additional R50 million investment. This commitment ensures his leadership of the expanded group for a minimum of five years.

7. Sacoven
Sacoven is a private investment and acquisition-related structure linked to deal-making activity associated with Vivian Imerman’s broader investment ecosystem. It has been referenced in relation to transaction planning and strategic investment execution, particularly within beverage and consumer goods opportunities. The entity functions more as a special-purpose investment or holding structure rather than an operating company.
