Woolworths is bringing an end to its long-running WRewards and MySchool cards, closing a chapter that has shaped the shopping experience of millions of South Africans for more than 15 years.

The retailer said the cards will stop working on June 30, 2026, as it completes the transition to its new MyDifference loyalty programme.

The change will also affect Discovery Vitality members, which rely on Woolworths shopping data to calculate HealthyFood rewards.

The move marks the final phase of a broader overhaul that began with the launch of MyDifference in June 2025. Woolworths is seeking to offer customers a more digital experience, with instant discounts, vouchers and personalized rewards becoming central to the programme.

WRewards was first introduced in 2010 and underwent several changes over the years.

Together with MySchool, the programme allowed customers to support charitable causes while receiving access to promotions and savings.

Woolworths said customers who register for MyDifference and link their accounts will continue earning HealthyFood Vitality rewards without interruption.

Woolworths shifts to digital-first rewards

Under the new system, customers can use either a physical MyDifference card or a virtual card available through the Woolies app.

However, Woolworths said the app is essential for members who want access to the full range of benefits.

Customers using only a physical card will continue receiving selected in-store savings but will not qualify for exclusive app-based rewards or personalized offers.

The company said members who complete the registration process will remain linked to Discovery Vitality.

The MyDifference card can be used across Woolworths stores, Country Road, Trenery, Witchery, selected W Cafés, NOW NOW and other participating partners in South Africa.

Three reward levels based on annual spending

The programme determines customer status according to annual spending. Spending between the first and last day of each calendar year is used to calculate reward levels, while upgrades take effect automatically once thresholds are reached.

Customers spending less than R12,000 a year qualify for the Loyal tier, which offers instant savings, promotional deals and at least four vouchers annually.

Those spending between R12,000 and R35,999 qualify for Ambassador status, gaining additional vouchers, access to all Play & Win games and extra reward opportunities.

Customers spending more than R36,000 annually reach VIP status. They receive all existing benefits, early access to online promotions, bonus games and invitations to exclusive events.

End of an era for WRewards

The retirement of WRewards brings to a close one of South Africa’s longest-running retail loyalty programmes.

As competition among retailers intensifies, Woolworths is betting that its MyDifference platform will help strengthen customer engagement while offering shoppers a more personalized rewards experience.
