French rail giant Alstom and its Egyptian partners have secured contracts worth approximately €690 million ($790 million) to modernize strategic railway corridors across Egypt, marking one of the country’s largest rail infrastructure upgrades aimed at boosting trade, logistics and industrial connectivity.

The consortium, which includes Rowad Modern Engineering and Concrete Plus, signed four contracts with Egyptian National Railways to upgrade key freight routes linking dry ports, industrial hubs and seaports.

The projects will focus on the 6th of October–Alexandria railway corridor and the Belbes–10th of Ramadan line, strengthening transport links that are critical to Egypt’s growing manufacturing and export sectors.

Digital rail systems to transform freight operations

The largest component of the investment is the 6th of October–Alexandria corridor project, valued at approximately €550 million ($630 million). Alstom’s share of the contract is estimated at €240 million ($275 million) .

The project includes the deployment of advanced digital signaling systems, upgraded telecommunications networks, reinforced power infrastructure, track rehabilitation and broader civil engineering works.

Once completed, the upgrades are expected to significantly improve rail safety, network reliability and freight capacity while reducing journey times by nearly 80 minutes.

A second project covering the Belbes–10th of Ramadan industrial corridor is valued at roughly €140 million ($160 million). The modernization effort is designed to improve logistics efficiency and strengthen freight movement between industrial production centers and export gateways.

Local content strategy supports Egyptian industry

The consortium expects local content to reach approximately 50%, leveraging Egyptian engineering expertise, contractors and domestic supply chains.

The investment is expected to create stronger connections between the 6th of October Dry Port, Alexandria Seaport and the 10th of Ramadan industrial zone, helping businesses move goods more efficiently while supporting Egypt’s broader economic development strategy.

Martin Vaujour, President for Africa, Middle East and Central Asia at Alstom, said the contracts underscore the company’s ability to deliver complex signaling and mobility infrastructure projects while maintaining a long-term commitment to Egypt’s transport sector.

Egypt advances infrastructure-led growth

The latest rail investment highlights Egypt’s continued push to modernize transportation infrastructure as it seeks to position itself as a regional logistics and manufacturing hub.

For Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, the contracts reinforce its growing footprint in Africa’s infrastructure sector.

The company is known for delivering advanced railway systems, high-speed trains, metro solutions and digital mobility technologies that improve operational efficiency and support long-term economic growth.

As freight volumes rise across North Africa, Egypt’s railway modernization program is expected to play a pivotal role in enhancing supply chain resilience, boosting trade competitiveness and supporting industrial expansion across the region.
