African women’s football is enjoying its biggest international spotlight yet, with a new generation of players earning recognition at some of the world’s leading clubs, winning major trophies and changing how the continent’s sporting talent is viewed globally. 

From Nigeria and South Africa to Zambia, Morocco, Malawi and Cameroon, African players are becoming central figures in Europe’s top leagues, the United States’ National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) and major international competitions. 

The progress has been visible at club and national team levels. African players have featured prominently in the English Women’s Super League, France’s Division 1 Féminine, Spain’s Liga F and the NWSL, while performances at the FIFA Women’s World Cup and the 2024 Olympic Games have strengthened the continent’s reputation. 

Investment in women’s football has also increased, with more clubs improving professional structures, broadcasters expanding coverage and sponsors showing greater interest in the sport. The growth of women’s leagues across Africa, alongside stronger performances from national teams, is creating more opportunities for players to compete internationally. 

For many of these footballers, success goes beyond personal achievements. They are becoming role models for young athletes across Africa and helping build a stronger commercial future for women’s football. 

Here are 10 African women football stars making a global impact.

1. Asisat Oshoala — Nigeria 

Asisat Oshoala remains one of Africa’s most successful footballers. The six-time CAF African Women’s Player of the Year winner has built an impressive career across Europe, Asia and North America. 

Oshoala enjoyed a historic spell with FC Barcelona Femení, where she won domestic titles and the UEFA Women’s Champions League in 2023. She later joined Bay FC in the United States, becoming one of the league’s most recognisable attacking players. 

Her pace, strength and finishing ability have made her one of the most influential African players of her generation.

2. Barbra Banda — Zambia 

Barbra Banda has emerged as one of the most feared forwards in global women’s football. The Zambia captain made international headlines at the 2024 Paris Olympics, scoring four goals and becoming one of the tournament’s standout performers. At club level, she played a key role in Orlando Pride winning the 2024 NWSL Championship. 

Known for her power, speed and leadership, Banda has become a symbol of Zambia’s rise in international football.

3. Chiamaka Nnadozie — Nigeria 

Chiamaka Nnadozie has established herself among the world’s top women’s goalkeepers. The Nigeria international has impressed in France with Paris FC Féminines, earning CAF Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year honours and attracting interest from major European clubs. 

Her composure, reflexes and ability to perform under pressure have made her one of Africa’s strongest defensive figures.

4. Thembi Kgatlana — South Africa 

Thembi Kgatlana continues to be one of South Africa’s most important attacking players. The 2018 CAF African Women’s Player of the Year has played in top leagues across the United States, Spain and Mexico. 

She has also played a key role in the success of Banyana Banyana, including the team’s historic FIFA Women’s World Cup performances. Her speed, creativity and ability to score important goals have made her a global name.

5. Tabitha Chawinga — Malawi 

Tabitha Chawinga has become one of Europe’s most productive attackers. After successful periods in China and Italy, Chawinga joined Paris Saint-Germain Féminine and continued to impress with her goal-scoring ability. 

Her performances have brought increased attention to Malawi’s football development and highlighted the quality of talent emerging from smaller football nations.

6. Temwa Chawinga — Malawi 

Temwa Chawinga has become one of the brightest stars in the NWSL. Playing for Kansas City Current, she gained worldwide attention after setting impressive scoring records and winning the 2024 NWSL Most Valuable Player award. 7. Ghizlaine Chebbak — Morocco 

Ghizlaine Chebbak has been central to Morocco’s rise in women’s football. 8. Rasheedat Ajibade — Nigeria

9. Jermaine Seoposenwe — South Africa

10. Ajara Nchout Njoya — Cameroon
