Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited has announced a major oil discovery in Nigeria’s Oil Mining Lease (OML) 74, reinforcing the country’s upstream potential and boosting investor confidence in its hydrocarbon sector.

The discovery follows the successful drilling of the JK-004 exploration well, which encountered approximately 1,000 feet of hydrocarbon-bearing intervals across seven reservoirs. Preliminary log interpretation and fluid analysis confirmed the presence of high-quality reservoirs containing light crude oil, signaling strong commercial viability and near-term development potential.

JK-004 discovery marks key milestone

The JK-004 well represents Renaissance Africa Energy’s first major exploration success since assuming operatorship of the asset just over a year ago. The result underscores the company’s technical capabilities and disciplined exploration strategy in unlocking value within Nigeria’s hydrocarbon basins.

Tony Attah, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Renaissance Africa Energy, described the discovery as a reflection of the company’s strong operational execution and collaborative approach.

“The success of JK-004 demonstrates the strength of our exploration program and commitment to delivering value across our assets,” Attah said.

Strong partnerships support success

The company credited its joint venture partners for playing a critical role in the discovery. Key partners include Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, TotalEnergies Limited, and Agip Energy and Natural Resources.

Attah also acknowledged the support of the Nigeria Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), noting that regulatory backing and strategic leadership from industry stakeholders contributed significantly to the project’s success.

Technical expertise drives exploration

Johnbosco Uche, Vice-President of Exploration and Chief Explorer at Renaissance Africa Energy, said the discovery was driven by advanced technical analysis, detailed subsurface evaluation, and a disciplined approach to reserves replacement.

“The JK-004 well provides a strong foundation for accelerated maturation, with clear pathways to early development and value realization,” Uche said.

He added that the well’s proximity to existing infrastructure enhances its commercial viability, enabling faster development timelines and improved cost efficiency.

Boost for Nigeria’s oil production outlook

Renaissance Africa Energy is owned by Renaissance Africa Energy Holding Limited, a consortium comprising ND Western Limited, Aradel Holdings Plc, Waltersmith Petroleum Development Company Limited, FIRST Exploration and Petroleum Development Company Limited, and Petrolin Group.

The discovery aligns with Nigeria’s broader objective of increasing oil and gas reserves to support long-term economic growth. Industry stakeholders say the find reinforces the continued potential of Nigeria’s hydrocarbon basins and strengthens the country’s position as a key energy producer in Africa.

As Renaissance advances appraisal and development plans, the JK-004 discovery is expected to contribute to Nigeria’s production outlook while further boosting investor confidence in the upstream oil and gas sector.
