OPay eyes one billion users as technology push drives faster payments

For millions of consumers, paying through OPay is as straightforward as hitting send and watching a confirmation slip onto their screen moments later. Behind those daily transfers sits a multiyear effort to rebuild infrastructure, an undertaking executives say will back the company’s push to reach one billion users globally.

At a briefing in Lagos, the African financial technology company detailed the hardware and software setups powering its consumer app. Officials said recent upgrades lifted transaction success rates to 99.9 percent while dropping processing speeds to under a second. Alongside those numbers, OPay outlined plans to sign up 10 million merchants worldwide and spend N1.2 billion ($875,000) on youth scholarship funds over the coming years.

As everyday commerce shifts further toward digital channels across emerging markets, company leaders said maintaining a stable system is crucial to keeping user trust.

Elizabeth Wang, OPay’s chief commercial officer, noted that users rarely see the mechanics behind a transaction. “People may only see a successful transfer or payment notification, but behind that moment are years of investment in technology and infrastructure,” Wang said. “Our goal is to make digital finance so dependable that customers move money without thinking about the underlying systems.”

Keeping that engine running smoothly required a heavy overhaul of its core systems, according to Dotun Adekunle, chief operating officer and chief technology officer at OPay. The company re-engineered its network setup by creating direct connections with card schemes and switches, building backup routing lines, and adding automatic failovers to prevent outages if a third-party bank stalls.

“Every failed transfer, delayed alert, or security issue is treated as an engineering task,” Adekunle said. “Where others accept these friction points as normal, our engineering teams work until the issue is cleared.” He added that checkout delays directly hit merchant revenues, making network uptime critical for small vendors reliant on digital payments.

OPay rolls out automated fraud monitoring

To handle security risks, OPay rolled out back-end fraud tools, including features it calls Night Guard, Large Transaction Shield, Emergency Lock, and automated anti-scam monitoring. Adekunle said these checks run silently in the background, flagging suspicious activity without adding friction to routine, low-risk payments.

“The effective security controls are those customers rarely notice because they trigger only when risk profiles change,” he said. “We designed the platform to protect account balances without slowing down daily transactions.”

Beyond transaction systems, OPay is expanding its 10-year education initiative. The OPay Scholars Program includes a national innovation challenge run alongside Google and the Nigerian government’s 3MTT program to build digital skills among younger workers. As OPay targets a broader global footprint, company executives maintain that reliable hardware, fraud prevention, and community support remain core to its market strategy.
