Egyptian businessman Hani Berzi has witnessed a significant drop in the market value of his stake in Edita Food Industries over the past 165 days, losing close to $100 million.

The decline stems from a steep fall in the company’s share price on the Egyptian Exchange (EGX) and the sharp devaluation of the Egyptian pound.

Losses deepen amid pound decline

As chairman and managing director of Edita, Berzi holds a 48.75% stake in the packaged snack food giant through Quantum Invest BV.

This stake, representing 682.52 million ordinary shares, has seen its value decrease by EGP3.07 billion ($99.47 million) over the past 165 days.

While the decline appears to be 13.98% in local currency terms, the Egyptian pound’s sharp depreciation against the dollar amplified Berzi’s losses to 21.25%. This erased the EGP3.21 billion ($74.48 million) gain he enjoyed in the first 38 days of 2026.

Currency slide weighs on Edita shares

Edita Food Industries, a leading player in Egypt’s expanding packaged snack food market, produces a wide range of popular products, including cakes, croissants, rusks, and wafers.

Despite its strong market presence, the company’s shares only climbed marginally by 0.73% year-to-date in local terms, from EGP27.5 at the start of the year to EGP27.7 at the time of drafting this report.

However, the steep depreciation of the Egyptian pound has resulted in a year-to-date decline of nearly 6.35% of its value against the US dollar, significantly deepening the plunge in dollar terms.

Adjusted for currency devaluation, Edita’s share price has fallen from $0.577 to $0.54, representing a 6.35% loss. This sharp decline has slashed the company’s market capitalization to EGP38.78 billion ($755.91 million).

Hani Berzi’s wealth takes $100 million hit
For Hani Berzi, the impact has been equally pronounced. While his stake in the company has decreased in local currency terms by EGP3.07 billion, from EGP21.98 billion to EGP18.91 billion, the dollar-denominated loss is much more significant. His holdings have declined from $468.02 million on February 8 to $368.54 million as of report writing, marking a $99.47-million loss.

As a result, Berzi has lost his position among the top ten richest investors on the Egyptian Exchange (EGX). Nevertheless, he remains one of the wealthiest individuals in Egypt and retains his standing as a prominent figure in the broader Middle East and North African region.
