South Africa’s second-largest grocer, Pick n Pay Stores Limited, backed by the Ackerman family, has appointed Tina Rookledge as its new chief financial officer, signaling a critical leadership shift as the South African retailer intensifies its turnaround strategy.

Rookledge succeeds Lerena Olivier, who retired following the company’s annual general meeting on Aug. 6 2026. The transition comes at a pivotal time for the retailer, which is working to restore profitability, strengthen its balance sheet, and rebuild investor confidence after a prolonged period of operational challenges.

The appointment forms part of a structured succession plan aimed at ensuring leadership continuity while supporting Pick n Pay’s long-term growth ambitions.

Succession plan reinforces turnaround execution

Pick n Pay’s board said Olivier’s retirement marks the conclusion of a tenure defined by steady financial stewardship amid significant transformation.

Her departure aligns with the company’s broader strategy to streamline operations, improve cost efficiency, and reposition the business for sustainable growth in an increasingly competitive retail landscape.

The retailer has been executing a multi-year turnaround plan focused on improving margins, optimizing store performance, and strengthening its financial position.

Rookledge brings deep financial leadership experience

Rookledge, a Chartered Accountant (South Africa), brings extensive experience across finance, operations, and executive leadership within large listed companies and multinational organizations.

She joined Pick n Pay in February 2026 and has spent the past six months working closely with the leadership team, ensuring a seamless transition into the CFO role. Rookledge has over 20 years’ experience in professional services, with deep expertise in governance and financial management. She has a strong understanding of the Pick n Pay business, having worked closely with the group in her previous role, Pick n Pay said.

Her appointment reflects the board’s confidence in her ability to drive financial discipline, support strategic execution, and accelerate the company’s recovery.

Governance compliance supports appointment

The board confirmed that Rookledge’s appointment followed a comprehensive fit-and-proper assessment in line with JSE Listings Requirements.

Pick n Pay also stated that there are no matters requiring disclosure regarding her director’s declaration, reinforcing governance transparency and regulatory compliance.

With immediate effect, Rookledge joins the board as an executive director, taking responsibility for overseeing the retailer’s financial strategy as management continues efforts to enhance performance and deliver sustainable shareholder value.

Leadership transition signals next growth phase

The CFO transition underscores Pick n Pay’s commitment to disciplined execution as it navigates a challenging retail environment.

With a strengthened leadership structure and a clear strategic focus, the company is positioning itself to stabilize operations, improve profitability, and unlock long-term value for shareholders.

Rookledge’s appointment marks a decisive step in advancing the retailer’s turnaround agenda while reinforcing confidence in its future direction.
